The needs of children and young people at-risk of and affected by the conflict, epidemics and climate change, are at the heart of UNICEF’s work in Sudan. This includes large scale response to emergencies and lifesaving needs; investment in preparedness and resilience; seeking durable solutions for displaced people; supporting conflict prevention, social cohesion and peace; building and strengthening support to and partnerships with civil society, local and international NGOs, private sector, frontline workers and local institutions; and preserving and strengthening systems that deliver basic services.

How can you make a difference?

As a Construction Officer, you will report to the construction manager/ chief field office as per the Country Office (CO) set-up and will be responsible for providing technical support to construction activities of the country office. The technical support on construction projects includes planning, support to procurement, as well as monitoring of construction works on site. You will collaborate closely with UNICEF Programme/ Operations in defining construction interventions to meet programmatic needs and achieve results for children.

As an advocate for children, you will have the following duties/tasks:

1. Preparation of construction annual workplan
2. Collaboration with UNICEF Programmes/Operations and coordination with Government counterparts
3. Preparation of design and technical documents
4. Support to procurement process
5. Monitoring of construction projects.

To qualify as a Champion for every child you will have:

• A university degree is required in in civil engineering, construction engineering, architecture, or other relevant area.

• minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience, at the national and/or international levels, in project monitoring, site supervision, quality assurance and/or other directly-related technical fields is required.

• Understanding of development and humanitarian work.

• Emergency experience an advantage.

• Fluency in English & Arabic is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Remarks:

The VA is open to all (internal and external candidates). However, priority will be given to staff on TA, UNVs who have current experience working in Sudan especially in active conflict areas.

Eligible staff members in the National Officers (NO) or General Service (GS) categories on fixed term, continuing or permanent contracts at Sudan office, can apply for the post and keep a lien against their original positions.

The successful candidate for this emergency recruitment MUST be available to commence work within 30 days of receiving an offer.

This position is not considered an elevated risk role. However, UNICEF reserves the right to conduct further vetting/assessment within the scope of child safeguarding as appropriate.
