United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Communication Division communicates UN Environment's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UN Environment worldwide.

This UNV position is located in Content and Client Services Section, Publishing Unit.

UNEP produces 100-150 publications and many more knowledge products annually, focused on a broad range of environmental issues and targeted to a diverse set of audiences, including Member States. The publishing unit supports and coordinates the quality control process for UNEP publications, liaises with internal and external stakeholders around publications planning and promotion, and supports legal agreements and editorial services. Located in the Content and Client Services section, Communication Division, the publishing unit also supports communication plans around publications.

Under the direct supervision of Managing Publisher, the UNV volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support UNEP colleagues in navigating the publications process and coordinate standard requests from UNEP colleagues and external parties (including management of the publications mailbox) • Respond to questions about the new electronic publishing process • Support for preparation of planning documents and lists for publications launches around key topics and at key conferences, including UNEA5.2 and UNEP@50. • Tracking and analyzing key metrics for publications including downloads, reach, and diversity; as well as data from publication surveys on website and internally with staff. • Implementation of FAQs for the new publishing process and workflows ensuring better streamlining of internal requests • Support Communication Division, and other divisions upon request, in running and interpretation of antiplagiarism checks • Support the Line of Products in gift shop • Preparation of publications newsletter strategy for different target audiences, and implementation of the strategy • Other support and coordination within the Content Client Services section as requested, including preparation of planning documents, minutes meeting, and coordination between teams.

scientific publications and/or communication; experience with environmental topics is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; 0- 3 years relevant experience • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Have affinity with or interest in environmental sustainability, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
