Job Description

TITLE: Youth Summer Program Intern (3) LOCATION: City Heights/El Cajon START DATE: June 2022 DURATION: 3 months, 10-20 hours/week

Important Note: This is an unpaid internship.

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities.

SCOPE OF WORK: IRC San Diego has operated Youth Programs in San Diego County since 1996, helping more than 100 refugee youth every year successfully stay in school, graduate, and transition to college or a career. The Youth Department’s focus is on newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth who have experienced trauma and continue to deal with a great deal of stress through the process of acculturation and language acquisition. Throughout the year, IRC’s Youth Department facilitates a variety of programs to support students academically in school and with the development of social emotional assets. During the summer, interns will support one of three summer programs in City Heights or El Cajon. IRC Summer Programs will blend developmentally appropriate English Language Learning with hands-on projects including crafts, games, sports, community projects and acculturation field trips. These programs are designed to empower youth through relationship building, English language development, self-exploration, and civic engagement

Qualifications

RESPONSIBILITIES: Youth Summer Program Interns will be assigned to one of three summer programs based on interest, skillset, and availability. Interns will support high-school aged youth in City Heights, high school aged youth in El Cajon, or middle school aged youth in El Cajon. All interns will be responsible for assisting in outreach, program development, implementation, administration, and field trip support. All youth program work is focused on the development of social emotional assets in the areas of Brain Building, Emotion Regulation, Positive Social Skills, Conflict Resolution and Perseverance. Interns will learn how to facilitate programming in a trauma informed, culturally responsive manner; and learn how to cultivate an equitable, welcoming environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Intern will learn how to coordinate engaging, skill-building activities for high school or middle school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices. Intern will develop skills to empower refugee and immigrant youth through supporting their social emotional learning. Intern will gain insight on various refugee and immigrant issues, and support the systems that enable them to thrive. Intern will be able to provide basic program management support including but not limited to outreach and recruitment, intake, data entry, lesson planning and group program facilitation.

REQUIREMENTS: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or certificate program Must be living in San Diego, CA, and comfortable working in person Must have driver’s license and reliable transportation Must have availability Monday – Friday between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm Experience working with refugees or English Language Learners ages 11-18 a plus Experience working in a diverse, multi-cultural setting a plus Experience leading craft projects, sports activities, or civic engagement projects a plus Able to commit 10-20 hours per week Bilingual or multilingual strongly preferred in Spanish, Swahili, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Pashto, or Farsi/Dari.
