1. Organizational Context

  1. Organizational Setting

The post is located in the Office of the Assistant Director General for Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector (GCPS). The Sector covers issues relating to traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources; leads efforts to work with other United Nations (UN) agencies and international organizations on cross-cutting global issues with an intellectual property aspect; builds on and expands partnerships with stakeholders, including those from international, business and civil society sectors; and reaches out to new stakeholders such as the youth.

  1. Purpose Statement

The incumbent is part of a multi-disciplinary team and provides inputs and information to guide and support the responsible officials in the development and monitoring of WIPO’s youth engagement activities and programs. WIPO’s activities in this area will primarily target the age group 15-35.

  1. Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Assistant Director General, Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector.

  1. Work Relations

The incumbent will work regularly with colleagues in Divisions and Departments across the whole of WIPO as well as external partners.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

a. Map and monitor existing and planned youth-focused activities across WIPO, evaluate impact and recommend new initiatives or components.

b. Research and compile information, and provide technical inputs to support the development of the WIPO strategy around youth engagement.

c. Contribute to the development of web-based communications around WIPO’s youth engagement activities and programs, including recommending content and maintaining a dedicated webpage.

d. Maintain established contacts, networks, resources and processes to support youth engagement activities.

e. Organize and provide logistical and administrative support for events, such as teleconferences, symposia and meetings.

f. Draft presentations, data points, background materials, analyses and other written materials to support the Sector on other programmatic matters in relation to youth engagement.

g. Perform any other relevant tasks.

3. Requirements

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree in international relations, communications, business, international development, or any field related to innovation, creativity or intellectual property.

Experience (Essential)

At least three years of relevant professional experience in at least one of these fields: communications, marketing, or content creation; and in an international environment.

Demonstrated record of engagement with, and outreach to youth and young people as well as a demonstrable interest in innovation, creativity or intellectual property, particularly as it relates to the youth.

Experience (Desirable)

Private sector experience.

Experience in youth engagement at the regional or international levels.

Language (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of other official UN languages.

Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into well-presented data points and recommendations.

Ease with social media and online platforms.

Ability to generate content for a wide variety of platforms and audiences, with specific attention paid to youth and young people in developing countries.

Sensitivity for the interrelationships between diverse policy fields.

Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Ability to handle complex issues, accommodate competing priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs under time pressure.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Knowledge of, and interest in, current policy issues related to innovation, creativity and intellectual property, especially those of concern and interest to youth.

5. Information

Mobility: WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization. Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

Annual salary****:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the August 2021 rate of 85.8%
