BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The Youth Program in Salt Lake City provides wrap-around education and social integration services for refugee youth ages 0-18 years old, including initial school enrollment, college and career readiness programming, and access to early education services in the community.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The Youth Casework Intern will support the Youth Casework Assistant and the rest of the Youth program team in enrolling new refugee students in school by providing training to families and completing enrollment paperwork. The intern will also provide logistical support to help students learn how to get to school such as walking and bus orientations on the first day of school. The intern will help build relationships with other refugee students and make them feel welcome at the office. The intern will support other Youth program services as needed.

COMMITMENT: Now to December 17th 2021, 10-15 hours per week


· Gather clients’ documents and complete school enrollment applications with refugee students

· Teach students how to walk or take the bus to school and coordinate logistics with Education and Casework team

· Build positive relationships with refugee youth and create fun and supportive environment

· Organize and put together school backpacks full of school supplies for new students

· Assist with transportation, as needed. It is helpful if intern can drive but is not mandatory

· Other related duties as assigned including monthly office support & reception coverage


· The intern will gain professional and practical experience in providing case management services to youth and their families in a multicultural context

· The intern will deepen understanding of the US refugee resettlement process and US education system

· The intern will gain practical experience of working with school districts and school support staff to provide holistic, wrap around services to youth



· Outgoing & independent; able to accomplish tasks efficiently and in a timely manner.

· Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance

· Successful completion of IRC background check

· Commitment to full internship term
