Job Description

The IRC in Baltimore was established in 1999 and currently serves over 2,500 immigrants and refugees per year.

Scope of Work The youth case management intern will support the activities of the youth program at the IRC. The youth program supports incoming refugee students and families to succeed in U.S. schools through providing orientations to the U.S. school system, facilitating parent engagement in their children’s education, and supporting public schools to serve refugee students. The IRC youth program works in close partnership with the Refugee Youth Project at Baltimore City Community College, Soccer Without Borders, Baltimore City Public Schools, and Baltimore Country Public Schools. The youth case management intern will work closely with the youth services team to provide direct services to refugee families.

Reports To Youth Caseworker or Youth Services Coordinator

Learning Objectives - Learn about the refugee resettlement process in the U.S., and specifically in Maryland - Learn about the school registration process for refugee students in local public schools. - Learn how to provide culturally sensitive support to students, parents/guardians, and schools.

Responsibilities - Assist with all youth case management activities, including school registrations, appointments for immunizations, home visits, and other referrals. - Assist with required documentation such as case-noting and case file preparation. - Support facilitation of weekly evening tutoring and mentoring program. - Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

- Prior experience and/or interest working with refugees and immigrants preferred. - Prior experience and/or interest in case management, social work or education preferred. - Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment. - Flexible and reliable, with outstanding attention to detail. - Strong problem-solving skills. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications (databases, Box). - Fluency in English required. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired. - Valid driver’s license, reliable access to a vehicle with current insurance and the ability to travel regularly throughout Baltimore strongly preferred.

Position Details - Summer 2022 internships may be a combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities and may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. - Interns, when working remotely, will need access to a computer and must be willing to comply with IRC acceptable use policies. - This includes password security protocols for personal device use. - Internships require a minimum of 15 hours per week for the duration of the 12-week internship. Preference will be given to applicants who are available on Tuesday and/or Wednesday evenings (5-8pm) for youth mentorship programs. - Internships start with a required orientation on Friday, May 20, 2022 (approx. 10 AM – 3 PM). - Regular weekly hours start the week of May 23 and will continue through August 12, 2022. - This is an unpaid internship. University credit may be arranged. - All IRC employees and volunteers are required to furnish proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be considered for this position.
