Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Women in Leadership and Governance Programme Specialist , the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Contribute to the development of Programme Formulation and strategies in the area of Women, Peace and Security (WPS****)

  • Provide inputs to the design and formulation of new programmes/ projects and initiatives on WPS in Ethiopia.
  • Support in identifying areas for priority support and intervention related to WPS programmes based on international and regional best practices.
  • Support in identifying strategic areas for intervention that focus on the peace and humanitarian nexus.

Provide inputs to building partnerships and resource mobilization strategies

  • Provide inputs to WPS resource mobilization efforts; analyze and maintain information and databases.
  • Support the preparation of relevant documentation such as project summaries, conference papers, briefing notes, speeches, and donor profiles.
  • Participate in donor meetings and public information events, as delegated.
  • Support the expansion of partnership on WPS with governmental, non-governmental and UN sister agencies in the area of advancing the WPS agenda

Participate in advocacy, knowledge building and coordination efforts

  • Support the development of background documents, briefs and presentations related to WPS in Ethiopia.
  • Assist UN Women team for the collection and documentation of lessons learned, good practices and innovative approaches and share with partners and key stakeholders.
  • Compile information from different sources and produce analytical synopses and reports particularly on contextual developments and key WPS trends.
  • Support, as needed, the development of publications, advocacy and communication materials.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Political science, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Humanitarian studies, Gender Studies or related fields

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the field of Women, Peace and Security (WPS), including SCR 1325 National Action Plans (NAPs), civilian crisis management/human security/peacekeeping/peacebuilding, and gender.

  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

Application procedure:

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland, therefore only Finnish nationals are eligible to apply.
