Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Peace and Security Section/Communication Campaigns Service/Strategic Communication Division/Department of Global Communications (DGC). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Peace and Security Section. The Peace and Security Section promotes UN work on priority peace and security-related issues, including conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disarmament and counter-terrorism through the design and implementation of global communications strategies; production and dissemination of public information materials; and outreach activities. Additionally it provides strategic communications support and backstopping to public information components of UN peacekeeping and special political missions; and assists in the development of communications policies and standard operating procedures for public information components in UN field peace missions.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

•Updates and edits web content on UN peace and security issues, including UN Peacekeeping website and other relevant website; checks content for accuracy and timeliness;

•Liaises with relevant departments and contractors (Office of Information and Communication Technology, Department of Peace Operations, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, peace operations and others) to coordinate content in multiple languages;

•Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format. Carries out support work for the Peace and Security Section including, graphic design work for print products such as posters and reports, ensuring photos and graphics conform to UN standards;

•Delivers data visualization for peace and security content, in particular for the UN Peacekeeping website;

•Provides specialized assistance and support, training and guidance to field missions, and client departments on developing, editing and managing content on using the UN Peace Operation web platform; coordinates the establishment of websites for new peace operations and field offices;

•Advises on user experience and accessibility issues for web content; carries out evaluation of web site performance, including through analytics; Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages by: researching and compiling and presenting ideas to improve the UN’s peace and security content.

•Acts as technical and content focal point for peace and security pages on the UN intranet (iSeek)

•Performs other duties as assigned.

Competencies - Professionalism: Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of digital communications including strong HML/CSS skill and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Photoshop; knowledge of data visualization methodologies and software; ability to understand policies, processes and procedures related to production and dissemination of digital (website and social media) content; Knowledge of policies, processes and procedures related to communication, production and dissemination of public information. Ability to research information from a variety of sources. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.   • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

    Education High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.

    Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public communication, with specific experience in web content management and/or web design is required. Experience with Content Management System (CMS), particularly Drupal is required. Experience with Tableau, Power BI and other data visualization tools is required. Experience managing web content in multiple languages is desirable. Experience with HTML/CSS is desirable. Experience in photo and video editing using Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
