Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

Five decades after the Stockholm Conference made the link between environment and poverty; thirty years after Rio chartered sustainable development; and seven years after the world adopted the 2030 Agenda, Sweden & Kenya welcomed the world to Stockholm again in June 2022. Based on the UN General Assembly Resolution 75/326, and anchored in the Decade of Action, the theme of the international meeting was “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity.”

The international meeting featured four plenary sessions in which leaders made calls for bold environmental action to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Three leadership dialogues, hundreds of side events – including several youth-led sessions – and webinars, as well as series of regional multi-stakeholder consultations in the run-up to the meeting enabled thousands of people around the world to engage in discussions and put forward their views. Stockholm+50 provided innovative ideas, new models of engagement and new possibilities for strengthening environmental governance. There were five pathways of importance:

1. A focus on the economic and financial drivers of planetary instability: 2. An environmental governance practice centred on ethics, stewardship, and responsibility 3. A movement toward an inclusive, networked, and distributed form of environmental governance and multilateralism 4. Our Common Agenda, intergenerational responsibility, and the long view. 5. Finally, three initiatives were launched at Stockholm+50 that can be transformational, help build trust, scale actions and leapfrog: i. A Data Driven Environmental Solutions Hub ii. CODES Action Plan for a Sustainable Planet in the Digital Age; and iii. Green Jobs for Youth Pact: Accelerating young skills and talent for green jobs

The Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) initiative is advancing action and change called for at Stockholm+50 by supporting governments to strengthen policy coherence; small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to increase capacities and access for financing innovation and circularity; and youth to amplify their voices and empower them to embrace sustainable lifestyles. GO4SDGs connects the dots towards decarbonization, resource efficiency and sustainability, integrating the circularity, climate and biodiversity agendas building on existing partnerships, tools, and pools of expertise around the world.

UNEP GO4SGDs requires support from a consultant who can professionally facilitate 4 meetings from coordinating and preparing the invited speakers to moderating engaging digital events - 2 as follow-up to Stockholm+50 to sustain momentum for action and 2 as part of GO4SDGs capacity development and knowledge sharing activities.
