This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Rural WASH Manager, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Programme Planning, implementation, monitoring and delivery of results
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external colleagues and partners to collect/ analyse / share information on implementation issues, provide solutions on routine programme implementation and alert appropriate officials and stakeholders for higher-level interventions and/or decisions.
  • Assist in keeping records of reports and assessments for easy reference and/or to capture and institutionalize lessons learned.
  • Contribute to the development/establishment of WASH-related outcome and output results, as well as related strategies, through analysis of WASH sector needs and priorities.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation exercises, programme reviews and annual sectoral reviews with government and other counterparts and prepare reports on results for required action/interventions at the higher level of program management.
  1. Technical and operational support for programme implementation
  • Participate in field visits and surveys, collect and share reports with partners/stakeholders.
  • Report critical issues, bottlenecks, and potential problems to supervisor, for timely action.
  1. Humanitarian WASH Preparedness and Response:
  • Study and fully understand UNICEF’s procedures for responding in an emergency.
  • Take up support roles in an emergency response and early recovery, as and when the need arises.
  1. Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building
  • Assist in the development, implementation, monitoring and documentation of WASH action research and innovation (technical or systems).
  • Assist in the preparation of learning/knowledge products, covering innovative approaches and good practices, to support overall WASH sector development.
  1. Networking and partnership building
  • Participate in building and sustaining close working partnerships with government counterparts and national stakeholders through active sharing of information and knowledge to facilitate programme implementation and build capacity of stakeholders to achieve WASH output results.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

University (first) degree in public health, social sciences, behaviour change communication, sanitary engineering or other specialist field related to WASH is required.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in in Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.
