JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Wash Assistant Band: I Reporting to: WASH Team Leader Technical line manager: Area Manager Direct reports: None Unit/department: WASH Location: Kibondo

Overall purpose of the role:

The WASH Assistant under the management and supervision of the WASH Team Leader and supervision by WASH Officer will be responsible to implement different activities of DRC related WASH program to ensure the program’s objectives are achieved.

Responsibilities: •Support Team Leader at community levels in identifying, mobilizing and sensitizing target communities for sanitation and hygiene promotion. •Support mapping out communities for village sanitation improvement, especially during CLTS/PHAST role out exercise. •Mobilization of beneficiary/communities to maintain the established/rehabilitated/protected water sources. •Support formation and training of Water supply and sanitation committees for the established/rehabilitated/protected water sources. •Participate in collection of useful data success stories and beneficiary lists as required. •Participate in preparing monthly/quarterly/annual highlights/reports and proposals for donors. •Presenting technical data or project results; both technical and non-technical. •Together with the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer, WASH Assistant is required to do proper daily supervision of construction of sanitation facilities i.e. construction of various types of latrines including household latrines, family shared and PSN latrines, decommissioning and replacement of full family shared latrines and installation of handwashing facilities. •Together with the WASH Engineer, WASH Assistant is required to participate in performing geo-physical survey, designing of water network, establishment of BOQ and supervise the construction of water network with proper fittings as well as establishment of COWSO for project sustainability. •Assist WASH Officers in inspection of sanitary facilities in household latrines, family shared latrines as well as boreholes, shallow wells and water pumps and other water supply systems to ensure they are operational. •To ensure that all work is carried out in a way that is sensitive to community needs and gender issues. In particular, to promote the full and equal participation of women in all aspects of the work and to ensure that DRC’s response is in line with the needs of the refugees. •To ensure that work aims to meet Minimum Standards and adheres to DRC’s emergency guidelines and protocols. •Assists the partners/communities in identifying their capacity building needs and facilitate appropriate capacity building measures (formal and informal means) to enhance local capacity and programme sustainability. •Conduct training to COWSO on water project management and sustainability. •Conduct CLTSH training to community health committees and community to reduce the open defecation and communicable diseases. •Conduct trainings to local artisans on latrine construction. •Work in close collaboration with partner agency and the local authorities to ensure that participatory approaches are used throughout the project cycle management. •Execute other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education: •Minimum of Diploma in Water Supply Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or WASH related course from recognized institution. Bachelor’s degree is an added advantage. •At least two years’ experience in implementing WASH projects specifically in area of water, hygiene and sanitation. •Thorough knowledge of WASH national and international standards. •Strong competence in English literacy. •Proven skills in computer programs (Word, Excel; Epanet, Auto card etc) •Strong interpersonal and communication skills. •Excellent skills in report writing and meeting deadlines. •Demonstrated ability to work in emergency. •To establish effective working relations with other team members and other stakeholders.

Languages: •English •Kiswahili •Knowledge of Kirundi a significant advantage.
