Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the UN Video Section, News and Content Branch, News and Media Division, under the Department of Global Communications. The UN Video Section produces human-centred, global stories on important UN issues affecting humanity, development, peace, human rights, the climate, and the environment. Videos highlighting the work of the United Nations in places, around strategic communications priorities, events and campaigns are created for digital and broadcast use, including using the art of story-telling to cover untold story angles from places that are often inaccessible to most reporters. UN Video programmes are unique because they give a voice to the voiceless reaching millions of households worldwide. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Video Section.

Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Video Section, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties: - Produce specific video projects including short and long broadcast features for global audiences, social media audiences, multimedia content, promotional video content and other video content as requested by the Chief of Video. - Responsibilities include but are not limited to: planning productions (including budgets), overseeing editorial content and production of stories and videos, directing in the field, conducting interviews, as well as shooting, writing scripts, and editing video content. Responsibilities will also involve feeding material from the field and writing news stories while in the field; - Oversee the production of news, social media and feature stories including for news magazine program, UN in Action and other products (in all official UN languages); generate story ideas and concepts for these productions; supervise the output of producers by commenting and editing narration scripts; create the rundowns and the running order for the shows; help make story assignments and engage in long term planning for the programs; supervise the pre-production, production and post-production of the feature stories to be included in the program; supervise all production aspects of the studio elements for the programs; liaise with the talent on the show and co-production partners for language versions; secure additional content for the programs including reformatting, purchasing or commissioning feature stories; - Assist with editorial supervision of all video products, including drafting and text editing video feature scripts, participating in editorial meetings and deciding editorial lines according to UN priorities and needs; suggest approaches to video projects by writing treatments or by evaluating treatments proposed by others; - Assist in creating campaign strategies, and coming up with distribution and promotion plans and help find funding sources and coproduction partners for the Video Section, as and when possible; - Liaise with departments and other United Nations offices concerned with a particular video project as well as with the Permanent Missions and national authorities in the areas where filming is to take place; - Take the lead in providing metrics of each of the programme outputs, suggesting alternate platforms as needed to enhance impact; - Undertake any other assignments given, including overseeing the recording of Secretary-General messages; - Take on performance management/supervising/coaching responsibilities when required; - Support the Chief in reporting responsibilities, analytics and management of support staff; - Serve as Officer-in-charge of the section, when required, in the absence of the chief.

Competencies Professionalism: Knowledge of the work of the UN and its specialized agencies. Developed script writing skills for video broadcast; ability to conceptualize, design and implement creative video production notably for an international audience; creative production abilities including writing for video platforms and editing the scripts of others; ability to shoot and edit video material (Adobe Premiere Suite); Understanding of the global media and social media market; attention to efficient use of available resources; Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines and achieving results. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges. Shows pride in work and in achievement; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; remains calm in stressful situations. Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology— particularly mobile and video for mobile technology; shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent) in communications, journalism, video, film and television or related areas. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in video production and script writing for broadcast (both short and long formats) as well as news and social media at the national and international level is required. Experience in communications, broadcast and film production, as well as with digital video platforms, is required. Experience with current technical developments and production editing techniques is required. Experience in filming and producing in international settings is desirable. Experience working in creating multilingual videos is desirable. Experience in an international news environment working for an intergovernmental institution is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
