UNICEF promotes the rights and well-being of every child, in everything we do - maternal and child health, nutrition, child protection, education, water, sanitation and hygiene as well as policy, advocacy, communication for development, planning and evaluation.

The Education Section at UNICEF Kiribati has an ongoing need for high quality visual documentation of its programmes in Kiribati, especially for the support on COVID-19 preparedness/response, teacher training, development of national Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) curriculum as well as positive parentings supported by the UNICEF Education programme. Effective visual communication materials are critical tools for sharing information, building networks for change, advocating on issues and mobilising resources. Materials collected are used by UNICEF, as well as by partners across various platforms.

For this assignment, a contractor is required to produce high quality photographs and videos that document Education programme supported by UNICEF, as well as key issues for the sector related to the programme, to meet the media and visibility needs for global and regional communication as well as resource mobilization and advocacy.

How can you make a difference?

Professional photo/videographer to gather visual content related to the education programme for resource mobilization, donor reports, advocacy, programme communication and other purposes.

Objectives

  • Support resource mobilization, donor reports, and advocacy work with compelling and authentic images and videos of children and communities related to education and the UNICEF Kiribati Education programme partnership with the Government of Kiribati.
  • Strengthen the documentation and communication of the education programme through quality photos and videos to show the programme impact on community members and children who have been impacted by the programme.

Scope of Work/ Work Assignments:

In support of the Education Section, the consultant will undertake the following content: • Produce at least 200 high quality images related to Education and programmes supported by UNICEF Education Section, including photos focusing on students at all levels (ECCE to senior secondary), photos focusing on teachers, photos that focus on classroom interaction between teacher and students and among students, photos that focus on parental/community engagement and family support for children. The photos should reflect the diversity of Kiribati (including urban/rural, children with disabilities, gender). • Produce three 3-5 minutes videos with sub-titles of UNICEF supported programme: • (i) COVID-19 awareness song • (ii) Remote learning • (iii)ECCE curriculum (UNICEF will provide video story ideas and guidance) • Collect consent forms and produce captions (including full descriptive based on UNICEF guideline) to accompany all photos. (Caption guidelines to be provided.) • Upload all photos to UNICEF Weshare web platform as per guidance from UNICEF • Process, edit and share the visual materials via an agreed platform in both RAW and edited format, including a folder of ‘best of’ shots and RAW footage.

The photos and videos will be used in a variety of formats, including print, digital and social media and will remain UNICEF property. The contractor is expected to use own equipment to produce photos and videos.

Work process

In support of the UNICEF Kiribati Education and Communications section, the contractor will travel within Kiribati where UNICEF Education programme has taken place, including South Tarawa (for 12 days), North Tarawa(for 4 days) and Maiana (for 4 days), to gather photos and videos. In total, the contractor is expected to spend 20 days for traveling and 12 days for editing photos and videos. UNICEF Education and/or Communication officer will accompany contractor during the travel in South Tarawa and outer islands. UNICEF vehicle will be used during the travels in South Tarawa, while travel arrangement to outer islands is expected to be done by the contractor.

It is expected that banners or logos of UNICEF or donors supporting UNICEF’s programme will be captured in the photos where applicable. Photos to be collected include but not limited to:

1. UNICEF’s programme related to COVID-19 preparedness/response

• Students (ECE to primary) singing COVID-19 awareness songs with gestures at school

• Students (ECE to primary) watching/singing COVID-19 awareness videos in a commuting bus

• Students (ECE to SSS) washing hands at newly constructed handwashing stations which were built as part of COVID-19 preparedness programme

• Students (ECE to SSS) practicing hygiene (coughing to elbow, washing hands) and social distancing practice (sitting with a distance to the next student) at school

• Children (ECE to SSS) practicing hygiene and social distancing practice with family at home

• Teachers attending capacity development workshop on remote learning support

• Student/s listening to the radio lessons

• Student/s learning through Learning Passport (Learning Management System)

• Parent/caregiver supporting children’s learning at home

2. UNICEF’s programme not related to COVID19

• ECE teachers reading/piloting children’s story books, which UNICEF supported, to students

• Parents and caregivers (father, mother, grandparents) reading/piloting children’s story books to their children

• ECE teachers piloting new curriculum in a classroom setting

• MoE officials supporting the programme (e.g. monitoring activities, facilitating workshops)

• UNICEF staff supporting the programme

• Participants (government and other partners) attending UNICEF-supported workshops actively

3.General photos of children and family

• A ECE teacher:

o reading books to children

o making toys with children

o support drawing of children

o facilitating outdoor play

o playing puzzles, shapes, blocks etc

• Teacher (ECE to SSS) interacting with students in class

• Parents and caregivers (father, mother, grandparents) engaging their child/ren (please define age group) in activities of early stimulation(please include many photos which show fathers’ engagement):

o reading to a child/ren

o singing songs with child/ren

o showing picture books to child/ren

o drawing with children

o playing with them inside and outside of house

o attending school management committee meetings and meetings with ECE teacher

• Students (ECE to SSS)

o concentrating on their classwork (individual/group)

o playing outdoors during break

o coming to school/going back home

• Students with disabilities (ECE to JSS) getting individual support from a teacher in mainstream school/special school or learning together with other students in mainstream setting

• Children (ECE to JSS?)

o learning culture and tradition from community elders at school and community settings

o practicing cultural practices at school or community settings

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of certificate in photography/image editing/graphics. In lieu of a certificate at least three years of professional standard photography
  • Ability to deliver images and stories according to the specified quality and technical requirements.
  • Substantive experience producing visual and text content for print, broadcast, online and social media platforms.
  • Professional photographer/storywriter with at least three years’ experience working with UNICEF or comparable international organizations/media.
  • Fluency in written English is required. Fluency in Kiribati is strongly preferred.
  • Expresses ideas and facts in writing and orally in a clear, organized and convincing manner appropriate to the audience and occasion.
