Result of Service Through the translation and interpretation services, the Initiative will be able to engage Chinese insurance community, who are one of the global leaders in environmental liability insurance, with the global insurers and regulators in a constructive dialogue on the potential opportunities to enhance environmental liability insurance for sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 400 banks, insurers and investors. For over 29 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.

UNEP FI’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), supported by DB Insurance. Co., is carrying out a project focused on the potential to mobilise the insurance industry’s role as risk managers, insurers and investors, specifically regarding environmental liability. UNEP FI needs a consultant to work on the English to Chinese (Mandarin) translation of the ground paper on environmental liability insurance. Currently it does not have the relevant professional expertise internally to carry out these tasks.

The IC will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Event Translation work: Translation of Environmental Liability Insurance paper from English into Mandarin.

The consultant/individual contractor will report to the Asia Pacific Programme Management Officer, UNEP FI and the overall responsibility for the consultant will rest with the Head of Unit, for UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills Skills: Excellent oral and written communications skills in Mandarin and English, strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide translations for webinars and events; ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. The consultant is expected to support the secretariat in delivering engaging events in multiple languages. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment across teams. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable.

Academic Qualifications: Advanced degree in interpretation, communications, administration or international relations or environmental affairs or social sciences. A first-level university degree in combination with additional relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Experience: At least 5 years’ experience working as a translator. Experience working with banks and /or insurers and/or investors is required as well as experience working in international contexts would be of benefit. The candidate should have successfully coordinated complex and, ideally, multi-stakeholder, projects.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is a requirement. Excellent knowledge of Mandarin is required.
