Background

NOTE: The duration of the assignment is until 30 January 2022. Whereas an external candidate will be offered a temporary appointment, subject to release agreements, staff members in UN Women may be administered as a temporary assignment and staff members in the UN Common system may be administered under a loan arrangement.

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Strategic Partnership Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the strategic positioning of UN Women and ensure that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. The division is organized into three functional clusters: Resource Mobilization; Multi-stakeholder Partnership and Engagement Section (MPES); and Communications & Advocacy.

The Individual, Digital and Public Giving Team sits in the Multi-stakeholder and Partnerships Engagement Section. At the global level, the team coordinates and provides technical support and strategic advice to Regional and Country offices on all individual and digital giving activities. The team also oversees the work of UN Women National Committees. UN Women has currently 12 National Committees (Australia, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, UK, USA), each established as an independent local non-governmental organization. Serving as the public face and dedicated voice of UN Women, the National Committees work to raise awareness on women’s rights; secure worldwide visibility for women and girls and raise funds from the private sector.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Chief of the Multi-stakeholder and Partnerships Engagement Section, and the overall direction of the Director of Strategic Partnerships Division, and in close collaboration with the Programme Division, Communication and Advocacy Section, Legal and Finance Divisions, the Head Individual, Digital and Public Giving is responsible for the leadership and substantive coordination of all individual and digital fundraising and partnership activities; as well as for the overall management and oversight of UN Women National Committees around the world.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead the development and implementation of a Individual Giving fundraising strategy for UN Women:

  • Lead the design, roll out and implementation of the UN Women resource mobilization strategy on Individual and Digital (Marketing) Giving;
  • Review and refine the strategy at regular intervals to harness new emerging opportunities, include innovative strategies and ideas;
  • Provide strategic guidance and support to all UN Women office in developing and implementing innovative locally-tailored partnerships and resource mobilization strategies and initiatives related to individual and digital giving fundraising, including identifying and providing guidance and support on opportunities for public giving;
  • Determine the partnerships landscape to ensure optimal win-win partnerships for UN Women in Individual and Digital Fundraising. Identify and mobilize key strategic partnerships to enhance impact and influence for UN Women's strategic priorities;
  • Lead the strategic, technical and marketing support for fundraising and engagement in National Committees and field offices.

Provide coordination support to global fundraising related to individual and digital giving:

  • Provide technical and marketing support to individual and digital giving;
  • Lead harmonizing resource mobilization activities globally;
  • Develop, assess, and refine policies and infrastructure for resource mobilization procedures;
  • Coordinate the inter-related efforts of the resource mobilization team to ensure a streamlined and efficient approach to building strategic partnerships for mobilizing financial resources.

Lead Advocacy and Communication initiatives related to Individual and Digital Giving:

  • Develop, plan, and lead the execution of global advocacy and high-profile outreach events and campaigns for Individual and Digital fundraising considering donor specific interests and priorities;
  • Collaborate with internal partners (media/ communications, outreach/ campaign) on the development and use of effective communications, outreach, branding and other resource mobilization mechanisms and tools to enhance the packaging and marketing of UN Women’s mission, competencies, and goals.
  • Act as a key resource of real-time partner intelligence for UN Women's senior leadership;
  • Maintain effective relationships with counterparts in other UN agencies, funds and programmes to promote and strengthen coordinated funding support for gender equality and women's empowerment.

Lead Knowledge Generation and Management initiatives on Individual and Digital Giving:

  • Manage the development, maintenance and sharing of knowledge and intelligence, including political intelligence, to ensure UN Women is informed and positioned to effectively generate and harness opportunities to meet its resource mobilization targets;
  • Organize trainings and workshops on digital and public giving;
  • Strengthen the case for investment in gender equality and women's empowerment by managing the development of high-quality information and knowledge materials;
  • Promote and facilitate exchange of information and knowledge between the resource mobilization team and other UN Women offices;
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

Manage the strategic direction of UN Women National Committees:

  • Develop and manage the implementation of UN Women National Committees strategies and Joint Partner Plans;
  • Identify programme opportunities, approaches, and modalities; make recommendations on National Committees advocacy, communications and fundraising strategies;
  • Provide direction in the formulation and implementation of high quality and relevant advocacy, communications and fundraising strategies;
  • Lead the progress reviews on National Committees’ work;
  • Lead and manage requests on investment funds and submission process to ensure proposals are correctly presented and submitted.

Manage the Individual, Digital and Public Giving Unit:

  • Lead and manage the performance of the resource mobilization team, contributing to effective team-building and fostering a well-coordinated team approach;
  • Ensure effective management through clear direction- and target-setting. Prepare and implement workplans and performance plans and reviews;
  • Contribute to strengthening the team members' capacities and promote professional growth, learning opportunities and knowledge sharing;
  • Review the team capacities and expertise required to strengthen UN Women's reputation and to build and maintain results-driven partnerships.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Masters University degree (or equivalent) in international development, public management, public / business administration, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in resource mobilization and partnerships development at the managerial level,
  • Previous experience at the management level in a fund fundraising, with a demonstrated track record in resource mobilization on significant portfolios, and proven experience in developing strategic plans and operational guidelines that enhance resources.
  • Familiarity with resource mobilization for gender equality programming preferred;
  • Experience of working in the field with an international organization a strong asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
