The security situation in Somalia is calm, however unpredictable. Despite the labile security condition, humanitarian access has not been a challenge. The main humanitarian issues in the region are drought lack of adequate resources, poverty, high inflation rate and vulnerability. There is approved accommodation for UN personnel in every location. Upon arrival staff members are picked up from the airport to the compound. There are UN flights to the regions and some security approved commercial aircraft. Use of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Dollow and Hargeisa. The available communication infrastructure in the area like internet connection and telephone providers are easily accessible. Food, water, and electricity is also being provided by the accommodation. Limited medical services available, banking availability is also limited.

Somalia is a unique country and UNDP Dollow and Hargeisa is a unique (humanitarian) operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
