This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the supervision of Chief of fleet maintenance, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for managing mission operations as follows:

  • Disassemble, identify required corrections, and reassemble equipment engines, front & rear axles, truck hydraulic systems and transmissions. Able to calculate dimensions and displacement for boring an engine with defects in compression ratio; skimming of cylinder head to rectify tolerance measurements for tight seal, checking water outlets for wear and tear.
  • Disassemble / assemble of auto transmission for heavy trucks and equipment, rectify sensors errors for shift gears, and calibrating changes in internal oil pressure pump; rectify Torque Converter problems; rectify pump impeller; stator and brake bands issues.
  • Ability to run diagnostic pressure tests for charge pump, fluid flywheel, steering clutches, spool valves , etc.
  • Can operate hydraulic pressure hose fabricating equipment; disassemble and assemble sewage truck suction pumps; installation of 3 -10 tons vehicle workshop lifts.
  • Able to install and operate which includes in-depth knowledge of fabricating various materials into vehicle components/parts, with high precision.
  • Knowledge in repairs and servicing of garbage module and new trucks transmissions; knowledge of interpreting schematic diagrams.
  • Able to conduct necessary repairs and take vehicles for test drives to verify roadworthiness
  • Inspect vehicles according to regulatory requirements for low emissions and safe working environment to ensure equipment longevity.
  • Knowledge of electronic ignition timing for various equipment with crankshaft sensors; common rail injectors and high-pressure pump operations and how to diagnose faults.
  • Electronical Electronic experience in rectifying error codes for ECU, BCM, APM, VMCU, PDM, EBS, BBM components including using diagnostic tools
  • Able to project and identify required spare parts of an ageing fleet; supervise and provide responsible leadership and technical direction guidelines. This includes systematic inspections, detection and correction of potential failures including defects in calibration inspections of such equipment at roadside and out-stations mobile breakdown.

  • Working closely with transport HQ workshop and regional transport/field offices in collaboration with the IWH Bangui, on warehouse issues related bin-to-bin spare parts transfers.

  • Monitoring and correcting of superseded part numbers from various vehicle manufactures.
  • Assisting the process of physical cycle counts and periodic reconsolidations in umoja assets for all field locations.
  • identify transport spare parts discrepancies, including obsolete spare parts and recommend for write-off.
  • Check and make sure spare parts descriptions are labeled with the correct technical name in accordance with the manufactures in Umoja system.
  • Monitor the overall performance of the fleet maintenance and servicing and ensure work orders are opened and closed in UMOJA in timely manner.
  • Supervises and coordinates transport administrative requirements including, opening and closing of work orders; fleet distribution (sector office); role of attendance monitor and other clerical work under the supervision of the Transport Officer/supervisor.
  • Acts as the focal point for transport matters and is required to respond and provide clients with assistance in transport matters.
  • Ability to perform vehicle inspections, maintenance and repairs in accordance with the United Nations standard of operations and manufacturers standards/recommendations.
  • Technical Knowledge of relevant safety procedures when repairing and fitting replacement parts and lubricants on vehicles, in workshop environment.
  • Ability to identify, diagnose and rectify various electrical faults on Heavy trucks, material handling equipment and earth moving equipment.
  • Liaise with TPT Acquisition planner on procuring and verifying vehicle parts, tools and other necessary workshop equipment ordered for region/HQ.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Transport Officer/Supervisor.
  • When working with national personnel or (non-)governmental counterparts, the Volunteer is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for training, coaching, mentoring and capacity

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Technical/Vocational diploma

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Diploma in Automotive Engineering or above;
    • Outstanding knowledge of automotive diagnostics, hydraulics, electronics, etc.
    • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
    • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
    • Installation of Lathe Machine; Workshop equipment; Vehicle Lifts
    • Can read any blueprints or schematics, calculate the dimensions needed for the job, ensure the machine and other equipment is in working order.

Required experience:

48 Months

Experience remark:

Minimum 4 years previous experience in Transport or material management and/or Light Heavy Vehicles Mechanic or Logistics and a minimum of 4 years driving testing officer.

MINUSCA holds a diverse fleet of heavy and light equipment (Plant & Airfield TMS Handling Equip), including medium trucks which are widely distributed in deep field locations and requires a dedicated roaming expert multi-skilled Technician to oversee the mechanical and electronical/electronic maintenance including fabrication of specialized tools and intricate parts.
