OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

-To assist countries in revitalizing primary health care and community-based care including referral support in relation to NCDs

-To support Member States in the development, strengthening and implementation of policies and strategies for management of chronic NCDs

-To provide technical support for operational research with the collaboration of the concerned technical units and department to generate evidence for effective and efficient interventions in the management of chronic NCDs.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the overall supervision of Director, Healthier Populations and Noncommunicable Diseases (HPN) and also under the guidance and support of the Coordinator, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

1) To coordinate and collaborate with Member States, relevant units and partners in strengthening themanagement of NCDs focusing on primary health care levelusing evidence-based technical packages such as the WHO PEN and HEARTS technical package;

2) To coordinate and collaborate with Member States and partners in strengthening cancer prevention and control in the Region, including cancer registration

3) To provide technical contribution in preparing the Regional Status Report/son Noncommunicable Diseases, including coordinating with Member States in obtaining country-specific inputs in finalizing the Reports;

4) Toliaisewith concerned technical units/departments/WCOs and provide technical contribution in documenting and finalizing theregional best practices in NCD management;

5) To promote operational research to provide evidence for the development of effective, efficient and equitableinterventions for management and delivery of NCD services;

6) To assist the HPN in implementing the GPW 13workplan including organizing regional workshops and preparing meeting reports; and

7) To perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Degree in Medicine with Masters Degree in Public Health or related health sciences from a recognized university.

Desirable: A doctoral degree in public health

Experience

Essential: At least 7 (seven) years of relevant experience, some of which should have been obtained in an international context in working in the field of public health in low-and middle-income country settings as well as at managerial level in the prevention and control of NCDs.

Desirable: Experience in primary health care services, public health management, sound knowledge in health research, and teaching/training of health personnel / providers

Skills

-Leadership skills and ability to establish harmonious relationships with government officials

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 74,913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2304 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
