OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The main objective of the Global Leprosy Programme is to achieve interruption of transmission and elimination of leprosy in Member States, specifically the targets of zero new autochthonous case in 120 countries, 70% reduction in annual new case detection and 90% reduction in grade-2 disability and child new case detection rates, as per the Global Leprosy Strategy 2021-2030

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the overall guidance of the Regional Director and direct supervision of the Team Leader, Global Leprosy Programme, the TO-GLP (Epidemiologist)will undertake the following activities:

1. Collection, compilation and analysis of global leprosy data forpreparing weekly epidemiological record for publication;

2. Develop innovative approaches for the delivery of interventions, in collaboration with WHO Regions on areas such as capacity-building, IEC, CBR and advocacy;

3. Review new evidence on leprosy emerging on a routine basis forinitiating steps to update technical guidance on leprosy;

4. Liaise with non-governmental organizations, private sector and otherpartners supporting global leprosy programme;

5. Mobilize resources for routine leprosy programme activities of GLP, Regional offices and country programmes;6. Preparation of background documents, working papers and meeting reports for the GLP-organized meetings;7. Perform other related duties as required or as instructed by supervisors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in Medicine. Master's degree in Public Health or Tropical Medicine Desirable: Postgraduate training in Epidemiology with specialized training in data management

Experience

Essential: At least seven years of relevant experience including some years of demonstrated international exposure. Desirable: Experience in leprosy programme activities, development and implementation of programmes related to communicable diseases prevention and control

Skills

Thorough knowledge of epidemiology and control aspects of leprosy. Ability to plan, design and implement public health programmes. Ability to organize and administer support to the countries of the Regions.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2094 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
