OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to help countries, and to coordinate international action, to prevent, prepare for, detect, rapidly respond to, and recover from outbreaks and emergencies.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of Lead of Interface of Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses and Diseases including COVID-19 and guidance of the Head of Global Influenza Programme(GIP), the incumbent is assigned all or part of the following responsibilities:

  1. Monitor and follow up various fronts of work of the integrated surveillance of influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses in collaboration and communication with subject experts involved.
  2. Liaise and facilitate country participation with focus on timely surveillance data reporting to FluNet and FluID. Serve as point of contact to participating countries on technical content of reporting.
  3. Support the development of surveillance outputs invarious formats of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses in collaboration with subject experts involved.
  4. Organize routine and ad-hoc communications with external entities. This includes development of progress reports, scheduling teleconferences, taking notes and other related tasks.
  5. Support the development of COVID-19 and other non-influenza components in epidemiological integrated surveillance guidance.
  6. Facilitate the amendment of existing influenza tools for COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses and diseases including those related to the estimate of disease burden.
  7. Attend various meetings related to above mentioned areas of work, develop summaries and facilitate communication among teams and experts.
  8. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A University degree in medicine or public health. Desirable: Training in epidemiology.

Experience

Essential: At least 5 years of surveillance of influenza and/or respiratory viral diseases including 3 years at global level. Experience in working with the WHO global influenza surveillance systems and in developing global surveillance tools. Experience in leveraging existing influenza systems for the surveillance of COVID-19. Experience of managing international projects. Desirable: Experience of working in WHO Regional Office or Country Office. Experience of integrated surveillance of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and/or other respiratory viruses at global level.

Skills

  1. Sound knowledge of influenza.
  2. Demonstrated skills in the development of reports and persuasive documents.
  3. Demonstrated organizational skills, high ability to organize logistics for events or conferences.
  4. Strong analytical skills and ability to analyse and synthesize information frommultiple sources and conduct independent research.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4271 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
