Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Medical Officer in the Non-communicable Diseases Management (NCM) unit, Regional adviser of NCDs and the overall guidance of the Director, UHC/Non-communicable Diseases, WHO EMRO. The incumbent will support the efforts on Strengthening the integration and management of NCDs in health system including in emergency settings, with a focus on the implementation of WHO technical packages (WHO PEN/HEARTS) on Primary health care and the regional roll out of the global commitment to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) as outlined in resolution EB141.R1.

The UNV will Contribute in the providing strategic and technical support to EMR countries in the integration of NCD services as part of national UHC benefit packages with a focus on primary health care. This would entail:

  • Conducting literature reviews and desk review as inputs for to the development of NCD in PHC country profiles
  • Review and monitor implementation of NCD prioritized interventions in countries part of the UHC Partnership, taking active part in the live monitoring sessions
  • Assist countries in the implementation of WHO Technical Packages (WHO PEN/HEARTS) taking active part in (virtual) country sessions/missions
  • Support the implementation of the Regional Framework for action on rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, liaising and supporting the work of the regional expert network
  • Assist in organizing regional and country meetings/workshops including webinars and developing presentations and briefs
  • Assist in any other technical tasks related to NCD management as part of NCD Management unit’s workplan
  • Develop and submit a progress report at the end of the assignment.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Minimum: Master's degree (or equivalent) in Public Health
    • Desirable: University degree in medicine, other natural or social sciences

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least two years’ working experience in public health.
  • Working experience specifically in NCDs prevention and control and mental health.

- Skills required for the assignment:

  • Excellent information technology skills, including word-processing, database applications, presentation software and internet,
  • Evidence of ability to think strategically; to express ideas clearly; to work independently and in teams; to demonstrate a sense of self-assuredness combined with cultural and gender sensitivity,
  • Knowledge of another of the following UN languages is desirable: French and/or Arabic.
  • A strong commitment to public health; an interest in adapting to varied physical and professional environments and a desire to work with people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
