OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The IPS unit ensures the high quality information products and services of the WHO Western Pacific Region, including translation, publications and library services, as part of the Region's overall strategy of using communications to increase awareness of health issues; and enhance visibility and engagement of WHO among media, Member States, partners, and the general public; and use effective communications to deliver better health outcomes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director, Office of the Regional Director and Communications and External Relations, and guidance of the Regional Director, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

1) Manages the planning and production of high-quality publications and information products and oversees efficient dissemination, marketing, promotion, and evaluation of these products - in close coordination with technical units and Communications Unit in the Regional Office for the Western Pacific;

2) Coordinates production of the annual Regional Director's report to WHO's Member States in the Western Pacific Region. Oversees regional library activities and services, including management and maintenance of the WPRO multi-media library; provides guidance to library staff, including on (but not limited to) the coordination and facilitation of internal and external access to databases such as WPRIM, HINARI, IRIS and other similar resources;

3) Ensures that cost-efficient and timely translation services are provided for key regional meetings and events; and

4) Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Master's degree (or higher) in management or other fields of study relevant to publications, translation and/or library services. Desirable: University degree and suitable training in publishing and/or communications. Degree or training in public health is an advantage.

Experience

Essential: Minimum of seven years relevant work experience, including strong experience of publishing services at international level. Desirable: Knowledge of and experience in information management and library services, and handling issues related to copyright. Experience in the UN system.

Skills

Essential: Strong experience in publications and publishing, with a strong eye for design and detail and a proven track record of planning and managing production of high-quality publications and information products. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Strong 'customer service' abilities. Courtesy, tact and ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct. Excellent managerial and delegation skills. Ability to multi-task successfully in a busy environment.

Desirable: Knowledge of library services and information management - including management of reproduction rights and copyright issues - and translation services in the UN context.

Use of Language Skills

Essential: Expert knowledge of written and spoken English. Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of other UN languages.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 73,516 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2794 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
