Result of Service Under supervision/guidance of a Statistician or more senior Statistical Assistant, provides effective statistical assistance to an essential function of the unit in an efficient and timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities The incumbent will support the implementation of the Resilient and agile national statistical systems: Improving Production and Communication of SDG Data to Leave No One Behind through modernization and improved coordination, and to contribute towards improved knowledge of disaggregated data and intersectional analysis to impact policy change and address inequalities to leave no one behind by strengthening skills and capacities of data producers to fill data gaps and improve international comparability through increased adoption of internationally agreed standards.

Within delegated authority, the Statistical Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assists in data collection, compilation, and dissemination, including the use of web scraping and APIs for automated data capturing.
  • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and loads data into a computerized database system.
  • Produces estimates and aggregates based on processing large microdata. Ensures disclosure protection and confidentiality of individual micro data sets.
  • Generates advanced graphs, tables, and statistical maps to facilitate further review and analysis of data by colleagues or for reports and official publications.
  • Participates in the review and compilation of background materials, e.g., previous survey material and results.
  • Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity, and validity.
  • Compiles statistical series for comparison against estimates.
  • Updates statistical series in established electronic formats. Applies new data and derived statistics.
  • Assists in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases and data dissemination portals and dashboards.
  • Assists in liaising with United Nations system organizations to obtain necessary statistical and other relevant information.
  • Prepares data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications/special skills A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of two years of experience in statistics, finance, accounting, economics, or related area. Experience in using modern statistical and data processing tools (Stata, Python, R) is required.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage
