Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Division on Globalization and Development Strategies (DGDS), Development Statistics and Information Branch. The Senior Statistician will report to the Chief of the Branch.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Senior Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Plans and directs the branch's work programme on statistical production, analysis and methodological work, providing both technical and managerial supervision of all activities.
  • Initiates, plans and directs preparation of publications, manuals and web sites in the specific area of the section.
  • Coordinates all statistical activities within UNCTAD and ensures the UNCTAD Quality Assurance Framework for Statistics is implemented across the organisation.
  • Plans and directs development and build of a world economic modellers database.
  • Plans and coordinates technical advisory activities for national statistical capacity building through missions, consultations and training workshops.
  • Supervises and undertakes the development of new or improved statistical methods and quantitative models for analyses and projects.
  • Prepares progress reports and other technical documentation regarding the work programme for presentation to relevant councils, commissions, technical meetings and expert groups.
  • Maintains close liaison and co-operation within the field of responsibility throughout the organization and with other relevant national and international institutions to ensure full co-ordination and to avoid duplication of efforts.
  • Represents the organization at international and regional meetings and inter-agency activities.
  • Advises senior management on trends and developments in the relevant field, and recommends appropriate courses of action.
  • Plans, organizes and manages staff; plans and discusses individual work programmes with staff and evaluates their performance.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned

Ability to write complex reports/papers to publication standard. Understands technical and political complexities of SDG/FFD indicators and composite indices, such as, inclusive growth and productive capacity. Appreciates the challenges and trade-offs involved in implementing a quality framework for statistics.     Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field. A first-level university degree in one of the above-mentioned fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience level in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area is required. Experience of research and analyses in economic or development statistics, as evidenced by a record of relevant papers published in peer reviewed journals or other official publications desirable. Experience in using applications such as SAS, R or STATA is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable.
