Organizational Setting

The Infrastructure and Facilities Management Service (CSLI) is responsible for the maintenance of the entire headquarters premises and for providing services to staff. CSLI assists Decentralized Offices in maintenance activities for spaces of FAO and those related to FAO technical projects. CSLI also coordinates the special infrastructure projects of the Government of Italy, which involve upgrading the structure and buildings of headquarters premises, in line with current safety norms.

Reporting Lines

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will report to the Senior Facilities Management Officer and work in collaboration with the Facilities Management Officers and assistants.

Technical Focus

The candidate will provide technical assistance to the sites pertaining to the Organization as the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Plumbing, Controls, Fire Protection and other best mechanical engineering practices in compliance with the Italian codes. The selected candidate will prepare tender documentation inclusive of scope of work, drawings, technical specifications and bill of quantities, calculations, feasibility studies, and provide construction document, installation and testing supervision.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, review and approval of construction plans, including goals and objectives, work breakdown structure, detailed scope descriptions, detailed schedules, risk management approach, milestone descriptions, budgets and staffing requirements;
  • Provide technical support to marketing for bids and proposals;
  • Manage, expedite, and support consultants’ and construction document submittals, budgets, and schedules;
  • Maintain and foster contacts with consultants, contractors, vendors, and material suppliers;
  • Assist with the development of new engineering standards, maintain, and improve existing standards and guidelines, implementing best practices within the Organization;
  • Act as a subject matter expert regarding some mechanical engineering activities;
  • Prepare engineering scope documents, exhibits, budgets, specifications, schedules, and Requests for Proposals (RFPs);
  • Lead or participate in project meetings and conference calls;
  • Produce quality engineering plans, studies, and specifications while ensuring compliance with department, project, company, utility, regional entity, and industry requirements and standards;
  • Participate in engineering, design, and construction review processes;
  • Conduct value-engineering studies of alternative design approaches;
  • Interpret plans, specifications, drawings, and documents related to engineering and construction;
  • Lead or assist with investigations of mechanical-related issues, including root cause analysis as needed;
  • Additional duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • 15 years of relevant working experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering;
  • National Professional Registration in Italy is required;
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English; limited knowledge (level B) of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish); (for PSA can be required only one FAO language level C).

Selection Criteria

  • Number of years of working experience on complex mechanical projects in different countries;
  • Knowledge of Italian.
