Result of Service - Presentation decks on art direction for multi-channel digital campaigns

  • Delivery of social media and web graphics for global advocacy campaigns and UN evergreen topics, adaptable for languages

  • Delivery of designs as canva templates

  • Delivery of final design files with layers clearly organized and marked up with associated art and fonts in Illustrator and/or Photoshop

  • Training session on adaptation of art files for translation

    Duties and Responsibilities - Design striking social- and web-optimized assets, adaptable for multiple languages and optimized for the UN’s global social media channels. This includes designing graphics using photos, illustrations, data visualization/infographic elements, iconography, and at times simple motion assets in line with latest design trends and standards for external digital channels (campaign websites, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

  • Provide art direction on small-and large-scale projects from creative conception to execution. Campaign topics can include, but are not limited to, Water Conference, Countering Hate Speech, Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Action and Peace and Security. Ensure design concepts and visual systems are diverse, inclusive and accessible. Present design work for review and final approval.

  • Occasionally take on urgent design requests for the UN’s global social media accounts

  • Take an active role in all stages of the production process, including creative ideation, mood boards, photo research and licensing, storyboarding, and final design execution.

  • Function as both sole individual designer and/or lead graphic designer when working with freelance resources. Potentially coordinate with a writer and/or senior motion designer for more complex campaign concepts under the creative direction of Digital Campaigns Unit lead in close coordination with relevant sections.

  • Adapt digital assets produced in Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and/or AE for different formats (web/social media) and multiple languages. This includes transforming assets into design templates on third-party design tools, such as Canva, to enable public information officers globally to modify assets for their local language.

  • Upload and organize design assets on Trello boards

  • Facilitate a training on adaptation of assets and art files for languages with UN Information Centers.

  • Deliver all final design files (e.g. in AI, PSD) with layers clearly organized and marked up with associated art and fonts.

  • Collaborate closely with various teams within the Communications Campaigns Service, such as the Social Media team, and relevant counterparts in the Department of Global Communications, during all stages of the production cycle to ensure brand guidelines and brand voice are adhered to across executions of digital assets.

    Qualifications/special skills - BA in Graphic Design, Digital Design, Communication Design, Information Design, News or Journalism Design, Advertising, or related field is required. MA is desirable.

  • At least 7+ years experience in graphic design and art direction for global digital platforms, especially for social media is required

  • Experience working for international organizations, design firm, advertising or in-house creative department is required

  • Experience working on creative campaigns for global social causes is required

  • Experience in illustration, animation and/or motion graphics is desirable

    Languages Excellent knowledge of English is required. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.

    Additional Information Knowledge & Skills:

  • Design portfolio in art direction and graphic design. Portfolio should demonstrate expertise in social media design, graphic design, creative campaign design, typography, information design, branding and, where relevant, skills in other areas of art (e.g. illustration, motion design, if applicable)

  • Expert level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, in particular Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Exceptional capability with typography, layout, storyboarding, information design and prototyping, and designing with languages in mind
  • Strong theoretical and practical background in art direction, branding and design for digital platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, websites, etc).
  • Strong interest in social and cultural trends and emerging digital technologies and design trends
  • Experience in tools, such as Trello and Canva
  • Expertise in transforming strategic briefs and requests into meaningful designs
  • Highly collaborative approach with writers, motion producers, social media producers and policy experts.
  • Works well independently and within a matrix team structure.
  • Strong detail-oriented, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Digitally savvy, hands-on self-starter with ability to think big picture.
