Job Title: Senior Copywriter Consultant

Type of Contract: Regular Consultant

Division: CAM Communication Advocacy and Marketing Division

Duty Station (City, Country): Home-based (location maximum 3 hours ahead/after Rome time)

Duration: 11 months

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

To support increased engagement with its audiences, the UN World Food Programme has significant plans for growth in brand awareness, story content and broader supporter engagement. Powerful and engaging story-telling and compelling copy will be critical to achieving these ambitious plans.

The Senior Copywriter will produce high quality copy for marketing and engagement, working with a team of creative professionals on large- and small-scale marketing projects and campaigns, primarily for digital channels. This will include developing story content, brand-positioning messaging as well as propositions that position WFP, our work and the people we serve in an engaging way, to help multiple stakeholders and teams communicate with their audiences and achieve differentiation and cut through in a crowded marketplace. These audiences targeted will be from multiple countries, so although communications will be generated and produced in English, they will need to resonate in multiple countries.

The consultant should have experience working with a diverse range of clients, including leading humanitarian and development agencies – either UN or international NGOs – or in an agency with international humanitarian/INGO clients. This experience should include producing copy for direct marketing and ideally for engaging and raising funds from individual supporters, in line with brand guidelines and organizational messaging. This is a full-time position for 11 months.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general supervision and guidance of the Creative Studio Story Producer, the Senior Copywriter will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Developing strong, compelling copy for digital, print, video and occasional offline initiatives (including for supporter-focused copy, for individual supporter retention and acquisition).
  • Producing written story content (case studies, photo stories, infographics, donor engagement pieces) for use across a variety of channels.
  • Producing targeted and engaging copy for on-line marketing campaigns and activities based on identified projects/programs. This will include copywriting in response to sudden-onset emergencies, drawing from pre-approved organizational messaging.
  • Crafting engagement content and copy for digital and other platforms including paid digital advertising, landing pages and email marketing.
  • Participating in brainstorms/creative sessions to generate ideas and directions for specific projects and campaigns, as needed.
  • Ad-hoc writing tasks as requested, including for internal newsletters.
  • Editing in-house existing content to ensure accuracy and brand consistency.
  • Supporting WFP brand awareness aims and ensure all copy respects WFP's tone of voice, brand message guidelines, and global editorial standards, while driving supporter engagement and an increased level of retention and acquisition of new supporters.
  • Managing multiple projects and deliver to brief, deadline and budget.
  • Being available for ‘out of hours’ on-call work (including during weekends) in the event of a humanitarian or other emergency appeal.
  • Being willing to adapt and ‘roll your sleeves up’ to get the work done across a small team with big ambitions.
  • Occasional travel to Rome and/or WFP country operations, as requested/needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced University degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.

Experience:

At least 10 years of relevant professional experience with writing and producing copy to engage various audiences, including for marketing purposes.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Extensive experience working as a journalist or other creative professional, writing and producing engaging communication products
  • At least 5 years of copywriting and copy-editing experience in a creative environment for both digital and offline channels
  • Experience working with leading humanitarian and development agencies – either UN or international NGOs as clients or in an agency with UN or INGO clients
  • Experience of working with brand guides and editorial standards
  • Ability to translate technical language and organizational messaging into clear and compelling copy with a distinct brand voice and calls to action, including to engage and built loyalty from individual supporters
  • Ability to multitask, manage projects and meet tight deadlines consistently
  • Demonstrated ability to be data-driven and evidence-led and use performance and insights to inform decision-making to deliver higher returns in a programme
  • Exceptional communications skills both written and verbal, ability to scan, analyze and interpret information and to summarize complex issues, and tailor communications to different audiences and cultures
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish effective working relationships with people in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
