OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objective of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is to foster an effective global research effort on infectious diseases of poverty in which disease endemic countries play a pivotal role. The objective of the unit is to strengthen the capacity to undertake this research (with a focus on implementation research) to address health needs through evidence-based approaches, thereby advancing health and development in disease-endemic countries

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Initiate, lead and manage research capacity strengthening projects and initiatives.
  • Proactively engage in partnerships and identify innovative opportunities for synergy and fundraising.
  • Interact, collaborate and harmonize research capability strengthening activities with TDR`s global engagement and with the research for the implementation portfolio.
  • Manage, with the assistance of relevant advisory committees, the selection, initiation, management, monitoring, support and closure of project grants.
  • Equitably and proactively engage with low and middle-income country individuals and institutions to facilitate regional and country efforts to develop sustainable local research leadership and translation of research into policy and action.
  • Manage the development and production of reports and publications arising from this work and provide input into corporate TDR documentation, particularly relating to Research Capability Strengthening.
  • Communicate effectively on these activities, and more broadly represent TDR, to a large array of stakeholders, including to governmental and international agencies to reinforce TDR's vision and added value.8. Contribute to other TDR projects and activities as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Post-graduate degree related to infectious diseases of poverty and/or international health/or other related areas. Desirable: PhD degree in a field relevant to global public health.

Experience

Essential: At least ten years of experience in strengthening the capacity of health research in Low or Middlie Income Countriess including the development of training tools/courses and programmes. Demonstrated international experience. At least 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Desirable: Experience with the UN System or WHO.

Skills

  • Strong track record in managing activities to strengthen research capacity in low and middle-income countries.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and effectively negotiate interactions with internal and external partners including funders.
  • The ability to promote TDR's facilitating role in research training mechanisms through its networks.
  • Broad public health understanding of infectious diseases of poverty.
  • Demonstrated appreciation of the issues associated with developing individual excellence, capacity and leadership in health research in developing countries.
  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate partners towards success and to manage and plan strategies in relation to objectives.

Use of Language Skills

Essential: Expert knowledge of English. Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of WHO's official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 90,664 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5395 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
