How can you make a difference?

UNICEF’s Office of Research – Innocenti publications require layout in InDesign, optimized for print and web. The Office of Research therefore requires an experienced graphic designer to undertake professional design and layout of these publications in English, Italian and other languages and deliver the final product in both .pdf and .indd formats.

Scope of the work:

Based on the template and design of the Innocenti publications, produce draft layouts and final files (print-ready files, in InDesign and web-optimized pdf). The contractor will be paid on the basis of the actual number of papers commissioned. The graphic designer will accept up to three rounds of corrections for each paper.

Specific tasks:

• Ensure design follows the correct, most up-to-date template; • Ensure design of the figures that accurately reflect the data provided and the publication style guidelines; • Check that all text, footnotes, references, annexes and figures/tables are included; • Ensure, in the case of web versions, that the web links are included and are functional; • Ensure, in the case of print versions, that the web links are written out in full and are correct; • Propose ways to improve data visualizations or present options; • Deliver web-ready and print-ready formats within the timeframe agreed with UNICEF Innocenti, according to the length/complexity of the publication and any potential launch date, which may necessitate a tight timeframe; • Work with a member of the Publications unit for up to three rounds of corrections for each publication.

Individual Consultant who are selected from the roster will work under the supervision of the Editor and/or Editorial Associate, Publications Unit. The company will work from own work base. No travel is expected

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Qualifications and/or specialized knowledge or experience required and desirable for undertaking the assignment

1. At least five (5) years operating as professional graphic designer. 2. Experience working in the fields of graphic design, brochure design, logo design, web design and development, designing for print. 3. Ability to produce high quality design in InDesign. 4. Working experience with academic, research and/or technical publications reports. 5. Experience working with UNICEF and UN agencies. 6. Capacity to undertake layout in UN languages other than English (most commonly Italian, French and Spanish) and to deliver the final product in both .pdf and .indd formats.

Duration of this consultancy:

The roster will have a duration of two years, renewable for other two years. Consultancy arrangements may range from a fixed number of days to 11.5 months, depending on demand, project specifications and funding availability and will be subject to UNICEF General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants / Individual Contractors.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Depending on the type and length of contract, consultants may be eligible to receive Paid Time Off (PTO) credit at the rate of one- and one-half days (1.5 days) for each full month of service, to be credited on the last calendar day of the month, and up to 17 days for a maximum of 11.5 months contract.

Payment of professional fees shall follow the “best value for money” principle, i.e., achieving the desired outcome at the lowest possible fee. Consultants will be asked to stipulate all-inclusive fees, including lump sum travel and subsistence costs, as applicable.

Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.
