The purpose of this research study is to reaffirm and outline the continued importance of human rights and their fundamental principles. This research will involve an analysis of the human rights principles on a global, regional, i.e. in the MENA region and national level, i.e. in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The objective of segregating analysis into these geographical levels is to provide a holistic understanding of the human rights principles. Being an internationally recognised and adopted concept, it would be remiss to only considering human rights and their implications in a specific regional context alone. Case studies shall be used throughout the analysis of each principle, of which there will be examples of cases which have already come to conclusion and those which are still developing. investigating the principles through the lens of these cases will ground analysis in realistic circumstances and provide better insight into how the principles can be applied.

We are looking for the consulting support of an online volunteer to help us prepare a research study on the Practices and Applications of the UN Human Rights Principles.

The selected volunteers will be part of our team and will undertake the following activities:

  1. Organise and facilitate an online workshop with OHCHR-Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) as well as with the head of the UN Resident Coordinator Office in order to get a clearer picture and understanding of the ToR,
  2. Propose an outline of how to go about the implementation of the ToR,
  3. Identify the case studies from KSA, the MENA region and globally and share them with the Programme Coordinator of OHCHR-TCP,
  4. Carry out an in-depth analysis on human rights principles and different challenges in practicing and applying them, nationally, in KSA, regionally in the MENA region and internationally.
  5. Review some relevant existing policies and laws on human rights in KSA and three more countries from the MENA region as a benchmarks for progress rather than reviewing cases of violations,
  6. The consultant volunteer shall show a comparative analysis of relevant and diverse cases studies from the MENA region. In the case studies we need to highlight what each principle meant when it was practiced or applied (or perhaps not applied) in different contexts. The methodology should be based on facts.
