Result of Service Communication products, materials, tools and activities to enable the GEN to serve its community and increase its visibility, enhance the reach its knowledge sharing activities, particularly in the field of ending plastic pollution.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This position is located in the Geneva Environment Network Secretariat (GEN), Europe Office, United Nations Environment Programme. The GEN is a cooperative partnership of over 75 environment and sustainable development organizations and secretariats based in the International Environment House and elsewhere in the Geneva area, including United Nations offices and programmes, academic institutions, local authorities, and non-governmental organizations.

Established in 1999, GEN organizes and hosts meetings, roundtables, briefings and workshops promoting the dissemination of information and public awareness of environmental issues. In addition, GEN actively promotes increased cooperation and networking among its partners and develops a weekly newsletter highlighting the latest news, resources, events and job opportunities in the region.

The service of a consultant is required to contribute to the activities and outputs of the GEN Secretariat. The consultant will work part-time (40%) under the direct supervision of the GEN Coordinator, to develop the activities agreed at the annual donor meeting, in support to upcoming global environmental negotiations and other major environmental meetings.

More particularly the incumbent will focus on the ending plastic pollution agenda, co-coordinating the Geneva Beat Plastic Pollution dialogues and developing the Geneva Environment Network resources on this topic.

The Research and Communications Consultant will be responsible for:

1) carrying out technical research and data analysis on the thematic areas defined as priorities at the annual donor meeting, primarily on plastic and the environment;

2) co-coordinating and developing the Geneva Beat Plastic Pollution Dialogues and the plastic and the environment resources,

3) co-developing other materials, tools and activities to enable the Geneva Environment Network to serve its community, increase its visibility and enhance the reach;

4) co-organizing other virtual, hybrid and in-person multi-stakeholder events;

5) carrying out web-based updates.

Qualifications/special skills Competency: Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, web applications etc.); Comfortable with the use of photo editing and graphic design software. Ability to work independently as well as in a team. Ability to respond to tight deadlines in an organized and efficient manner. Academic Qualifications: University degree in political science, environment, or sustainable development. Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in content development, report writing in English; experience in implementing style guidelines, brand use guidelines and visuals; experience in web management platforms including WordPress; experience in using social network; experience in contributing to the global agenda to end plastic pollution; knowledge of Geneva Environmental community and global environmental agenda; experience in working with sustainability teams. Language: Excellent proven writing and editing skills in English. Good knowledge of French. Any other UN official language an asset.
