Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This position is located in the Geneva Environment Network Secretariat (GEN), Europe Office, United Nations Environment Programme. The GEN is a cooperative partnership of over 75 environment and sustainable development organizations and secretariats based in the International Environment House and elsewhere in the Geneva area, including United Nations offices and programmes, academic institutions, local authorities, and non-governmental organizations.

Established in 1999, GEN organizes and hosts meetings, roundtables, briefings and workshops promoting the dissemination of information and public awareness of environmental issues. In addition, GEN actively promotes increased cooperation and networking among its partners and develops a weekly newsletter highlighting the latest news, resources, events and job opportunities in the region.

The service of a consultant is required to assist the GEN Programme Coordinator with the work of the Secretariat. The consultant will work full-time under the direct supervision of the GEN Coordinator, to develop the activities agreed at the annual donor meeting, in support to upcoming global environmental negotiations and major meetings.

More particularly the incumbent will focus on the Human-Rights and environment related activities, including the Human Rights Council Session of March and June/July, as well as Aarhus Convention sessions, and other human rights’ bodies, and all what is related to the application of the right to a healthy environment as adopted in the resolution at the September session of the 2021 Human Rights Council, and the support to the mandates of the Special rapporteurs for a healthy environment, toxics and climate change. The incumbent will follow-up on collaborations with the MEAs administrated by UNECE. The incumbent will also look at engaging further with the business organizations based in Geneva in all the topics on the agenda.

The Research and Communications Consultant will be responsible for:

1) carrying out research and data analysis on partners activities and the thematic areas defined as priorities, particularly in the field of human rights and environment, as well as business and environmental trends;

2) prepare and edit articles reviewing expertise of international Geneva in human rights and environment, as well as on the engagement with business organizations and private sector;

3) monitor environmental activities taking place at the Human Rights Council and in other human rights related bodies, and support activities on implementation of the adoption of a human right to a healthy environment in other fora;

4) supporting the organization and coordination of the Geneva Stockholm+50 Hub;

5) supporting other multi-stakeholder events organized by the secretariat;

6) supporting social media activities, including live twitting during the events;

7) assisting in overall secretariat activities as required.

Qualifications/special skills Competency: Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, web applications etc.); Comfortable with the use of photo editing and graphic design software. Ability to work independently as well as in a team. Ability to respond to tight deadlines in an organized and efficient manner. Academic Qualifications: University degree in communications, journalism, environment, or sustainable development. Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in content development, report writing in English; experience in web management platforms including Wordpress; experience in using social network and organizing on-line and hybrid events/conferences; knowledge of Geneva Environmental Community, as well as of the global environmental and the human rights and environment agendas. Language: Excellent proven writing and editing skills in English. Good knowledge of French. Any other UN official language an asset.
