Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.

Main Purpose

As member of a team on reference material sales and proficiency tests, and under the supervision of the Laboratory Head, the Reference Materials Technician is responsible for service delivery on handling of external inquiries related to reference material sales orders, processing requests for quotations, provision of documents needed for customs clearance, as well as preparing, processing and sending hundreds of reference material shipments annually. Similar related support is provided for conducting IAEA proficiency tests including the preparation of shipments of hundreds of samples to participating laboratories. The Reference Material Technician will also take part in activities related to material preparation and handling, especially for the physical preparation like material crushing, milling and homogenisation.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Issue quotations for reference materials; send correspondence to IAEA customers, answer customer inquiries directly, or, in case of detailed technical questions, forward these to responsible technical staff; • Process orders of IAEA reference materials including preparation of parcels for shipments and all necessary documentation and ship them according to international shipment regulations; and act as alternate for colleagues in the process of reference material sales in compliance with the procedures of the established quality system. • Assist in the organisation of Terrestrial Environment Radiochemistry Laboratory proficiency tests and especially in the preparation and shipment of samples to participating laboratories. • Participate in the preparation, processing and handling of new reference materials at Terrestrial Environment Radiochemistry Laboratory, especially act as focal person in all aspects of necessary physical handling of candidate reference materials from drying, crushing, milling to the homogenisation and their bottling, therefore assisting the Terrestrial Environment Radiochemistry Laboratory reference material specialists continuously in the work to prepare and characterize new reference materials.

Completed secondary education. Post-secondary studies with relevance to the tasks above are an advantage.

Minimum of five years of working experience, in the area of laboratory techniques and administration.

Good knowledge in written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is desirable to be able to deal efficiently with local Forwarding Companies. Knowledge of another IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French or Spanish) is an advantage.

English language test (level 2) to IAEA standard.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 48132 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report. Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only.
