Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.

Main Purpose

To undertake research and development for the analysis of fission and activation products in environmental samples and for the characterization of proficiency test samples at environmental radioactivity levels.

Role

Under general supervision of the Head of the Terrestrial Environmental Radiochemistry Laboratory and as a member of the TERC Radionuclides & Environment Group, the Radioanalytical Specialist is: (1) a technical specialist assisting in the development and implementation of radioanalytical separation and measurement techniques in environmental samples, (2) an analyst undertaking measurements and analyzing the results, (3) a project lead for preparation and characterization of environmental proficiency test samples and participating in conducting related IAEA proficiency tests, and (4) a contributor to the corroboration activities within an IAEA project to assess analytical data produced by Japan on the planned disposal of processed water to the sea. The incumbent will conduct experimental work to contribute to the development and improvement of radioanalytical methods and will participate in characterization and complete validation of methods for the analysis of fission and activation products in the environment.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Contribute to the method development and validation of radiochemistry techniques for the analysis of fission and activation products in environmental matrices (including but not limited to I-129, Ni-63, Tc-99, C-14) to improve the performance of laboratories. • Assist with planning and producing environmental radionuclide proficiency test samples for the TERC annual proficiency test, including production of controlled surface reference materials and supporting certified reference materials for novel matrices and radionuclide compositions in line with the requirements of international standards. • Analysis and interpretation of sample analysis results, including statistical evaluations and report preparation, supporting the overall corroboration activities within the project supporting Japan. • Communicate the results in technical reports and in peer-reviewed scientific publications.
