Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Hindi Unit, News Section I in News and Content Branch, News and Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The Section produces daily news and feature stories, magazine programmes, and multimedia pieces for the UN News digital platform, incorporating audio and video elements, as well as social media content. It serves as the news agency of the UN system worldwide covering stories from the field, meetings of principal UN bodies, campaigns, events and activities. Overall, UN News delivers content in nine languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese and Kiswahili). The incumbent reports to the Chief of the News Section 1.

This is a project-based position that is available as soon as possible for a period of twelve months with the possibility of extension. Any further extension is dependent upon the extension of mandate and the availability of funds.

The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Chief of Unit may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development in producing a range of Hindi-language multi-media content in promoting universal ideas of the organization (e.g. global promotion initiatives, public information programmes for a region, broad-reaching subject specific issues, etc.); where appropriate to media organizations and the public around the world.
  • Identifies sources to promote and maintain regular communication with broadcasting organizations, media outlets and seeks feedback on the use of content produced by the relevant language unit.
  • Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other public information staff on issues related to the production of multimedia (including audio) and online news, and related content for target audiences.
  • Prepares or oversees the production of news and feature content, performing digital editing and management of audiovisual files, handling operational and editorial guidance to the staff, ensuring all content is in line with editorial guidelines. Assigns news coverage and thematic/campaign priorities including interviews, gathering audio and video material, undertaking digital editing and programming, podcasts and feature stories, ensuring content is tailored to audiences.
  • Keeps abreast of latest developments in multimedia production, technological innovations and marketing techniques in the online, radio broadcast and social media industries and ensures the successful application to the productions in the relevant language unit.
  • Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN.
  • Represents the institution in meetings and conferences planning and implementing promotional efforts including media coverage through effective liaison with media contacts and broadcasting organizations on major issues and events concerning the organization.
  • Is responsible for the substantive and administrative activities of the unit, providing procedural advice, and improving reporting systems.
  • Supervises the work of the Hindi unit.

    Competencies Professionalism: Knowledge of digital journalism; political awareness and judgment and knowledge of international current affairs. Ability to write and edit compelling online news content, with attention to accuracy and political sensitivity, making use of sound, images and words, and to make effective on-air presentations. Knowledge of digital editing technology and of multimedia platforms. Discretion and sound judgment in applying expertise to complex and/or sensitive issues. Proven experience managing social media properties and multimedia pages, as well as developing and posting content for them. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Managerial Competencies: Managing Performance: Delegates the appropriate responsibility, accountability and decision making authority. Makes sure that roles, responsibilities and reporting lines are clear to each staff member. Accurately judges the amount of time and resources needed to accomplish a task and matches task to skills. Monitors progress against milestones and deadlines. Regularly discusses performance and provides feedback and coaching to staff. Actively supports the development and career aspirations of staff.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public relations or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. Experience in leading a multimedia news team covering global news to daily deadlines required. Experience in providing editorial guidance and editing multimedia news and social media ready content in a daily newsroom context required. Experience writing text-based news stories, producing and narrating/voicing programs in the relevant language (Hindi) is required. Experience in digital desk-top audio editing, content management posting, micro-video creation and digital publishing is desirable. Experience in managing newsroom transformations and measuring performance analysis is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Hindi are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
