Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Department of Global Communications (DGC), Outreach Division (OD), Knowledge Solutions and Design Section (KSD), The UN Intranet-iSeek.

This Section specializes in web solutions, internal communications, branding and graphic design. It consists of three components: The Graphic Design Unit (GDU) which provides graphic design solutions and branding for United Nations global communications campaigns and publications; The Web Group, which provides web development and knowledge solutions for all OD sections; The UN Intranet-iSeek Team which provides internal communications service in English and French to UN staff through iSeek and information for Permanent Missions through Delegate; The incumbent reports to the Team Leader of The UN Intranet-iSeek (iSeek) and to the Chief of KSD.

The position is available immediately through 5 October 2022 with possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Assistant may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services on The UN Intranet-iSeek (iSeek).
  • Researches a broad scope of information sources; compiles information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for internal audiences.
  • Performs junior photo functions that include provision of research services through the UN photographic materials.
  • Assists in the electronic dissemination of information on iSeek; prepares, maintains and updates iSeek web pages to include: drafting and editing content; uploads documents and pictures; linking to relevant information including videos and audio files; maintaining site structure.
  • Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages on iSeek: posts stories, announcements, spotlights, events; edits documents to conform to UN Intranet format, structure and style; prepares new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; posts documents on the UN Intranet and/or development servers and ensures the appropriate directory location; Checks and tests for multiple browser support, etc. Manages updates and further develops surveys, polls and online forms on iSeek for clients;
  • Provides guidance and training to staff/departments on the site architecture and the content management system, Drupal and other databases linked to iSeek.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education High school diploma or equivalent.

    Work Experience Minimum seven (7) years of experience in public communication, internal communications or related area is required.

    Experience with content management systems is required.

    Experience in using Drupal is desirable.

    Experience in design and management of content for websites is desirable.

    Experience in evaluating and testing website user experience (UX) is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice - This position is effective immediately, through 5 October 2022, with possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

  • This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

    United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
