Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Television News and Facilities Unit (UNTV), Audiovisual Services Section, Coverage and Media Services Branch, News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC). UNTV provides live transmission to broadcast networks of key events taking place at UN Headquarters, and major UN conferences held around the world. It operates TV studios for recording messages and other formats of programmes for dissemination to the public. The Incumbent reports to the Chief of Television News and Facilities Unit (UNTV).

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides specialized assistance in organizing production in the Studio to help ensure smooth delivery of services.
  • Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for internal and external audiences.
  • Serves as focal point in support of UNTV Chief for SDG Studio (the Studio) operations; coordinates studio booking requests and conducts initial screenings of requests following the SDG Studio guidelines; compiles, evaluates and makes recommendations to UNTV Chief on the requests; liaises with client offices and provide information on coverage requirements including budget estimates as maybe required; coordinates logistic and technical arrangements/requests and organizes technical personnel.
  • Assists in the Studio production, including editing of video footages and designs, in close consultation with UN Video Section, UN News, client offices and the UN Audiovisual Library; researches diverse source materials for topics; suggests ideas.; selects, edits and evaluates quality for inclusion in the Studio productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights, etc.
  • Organizes and executes special events, coordinating with diverse partners and the media to highlight and publicize key events.
  • Handles administrative coordination in support of the Studio operation, including keeping track of financial transactions; maintaining records of the use of Studio and the client types; and providing such information for reporting.
  • Participates in planning and execution of live broadcasts or taping of programmes; undertakes pre-production and post-production; provides logistical support and facilitates the movement of technical personnel , etc.
  • Manages updates and enters relevant content into the UN Media Assets Management system making sure that all videos conform with UNTV and archival standards, accompanied by all required technical and descriptive metadata, and are appropriately categorized; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the SDG Studio, including timely and appropriate repair, procurement and replacement of equipment and keeping custody of property inventory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required.

Experience in television studio production and live transmission is required.

Experience in video editing, production and Adobe Premiere software is required.

Experience working in an international or intergovernmental setting is desirable.

Experience handling technical and administrative aspects of TV studio operations is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
