Result of Service The services of the Individual Contractor will result in the provision of reliable programmatic and administrative support and coordination to programme/project planning and activities and provide effective support to office operations. Processes work and requisite follow-up accomplished under some supervision, seeks advice from and/or reporting to supervisor as needed. Accurately prepares reports. Consistently applies appropriate policies, guidelines and procedures. Effectively and in a timely manner, liaises and interacts with colleagues and concerned parties internally and externally.

Expected duration The assignment is for 9 months.

Indicative level of remuneration: Individual Contractor assignment equivalent to GS-5

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UN Environment work in Kenya is coordinated through the Africa office’s Kenya Country Programme, which is responsible for aligning Kenya’s Vision 2030 to the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals in an inclusive way through a multi-stakeholder engagement.

This position is located within UNEP Regional Office for Africa at the Nairobi duty station and reports to the Head of the Kenya Country Programme

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision by the Programme Coordinator, Kenya Country Programme, the incumbent shall:

  • Provide overall support to the programme’s engagement in the development process and implementation of the 2022-2026 Kenya - UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF);
  • Support the annual reporting process of the UN country team (UNCT) in the data portal UNinfo in close collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation focal point at the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office;
  • Foster the programme’s engagement with Faith-Based Organizations on Ecosystem Restoration.
  • Provide technical assistance in program design and delivery for all awareness-raising and capacity building-related activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of various programme, advocacy strategies such as organizing meetings, forums, conferences, and workshops.
  • Lead drafting of outcome reports and action plans emanating from national meetings/forums/conferences/workshops;
  • Provide technical support in the implementation of the UNICEF-UNEP joint Cooperation in the framework of the implementation of the MoU between the two agencies;
  • Foster community empowerment and national connectivity by developing the programme’s contacts information database for resource sharing especially, liaises with key project actors, including high level officers and government counterparts, when required;
  • Provide programme administrative support including making logistical arrangements for mission activities;
  • Performs other related tasks, as required.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: High School Diploma is required. Supplementary training in natural science, natural resource management, environmental policy, environmental economics or related field is desirable. Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of professional working experience relating to project or programme management in the environmental sector is required. At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience within the UN system is desirable. Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement is desirable. Language: English and French are official UN languages. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is added an advantage.
