Duties and Responsibilities The Arab region is at the cusp of a demographic transition that heralds the beginning of population ageing. The number of older persons is expected to increase from 32 million today to more than 100 million in 2050. Recent research has highlighted the extreme vulnerability of older persons and their risk of being left behind. This very fast transition and the dire socio-economic situation of older persons require Arab governments to intensify their efforts to adopt cohesive policies that ensure the dignity for older persons today and in the near future. On the other hand, the Arab region continues to be a prominent region of international migration and forced displacement. In 2020, Arab countries hosted around 41.4 million migrants and refugees, representing almost 15 per cent of international migrants and refugees worldwide. Countries miss out on the opportunity to optimize migrations contribution to development. Data on migration that is disaggregated by age, sex and migratory status is scarce in the region further limiting the ability to develop evidence-based policies that respond to the needs of migrants and ensure their rights and protection. Against this background, ESCWA has been leading work in the area of ageing and migration in the Arab region through: Addressing the knowledge gap: ESCWA, is developing a series of knowledge products on population and ageing and migration. Facilitating regional dialogue: In 2022-2023, ESCWA hold several regional events including the ICPD regional review, the annual migration conference, the annual focal points on ageing capacity building workshop, a series of stakeholder dialogues among other activities. Providing technical support to member States: ESCWA is providing technical assistance to several Member States to develop their population related policies. Assistance is currently provided to Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Iraq, Sudan, Morocco, Somalia, and Tunisia. Developing groundbreaking research: ESCWA will prepare the SRIM 2023 edition and the 10th edition of the population and development report, in addition to thematic policy briefs. ESCWA will also updates its migration policies database in the Arab region that aims to facilitate access to migration related policies adopted by Arab countries. The database will be continuously updated through a desk research to be conducted by ESCWA.
