Org. Setting and Reporting This post is found within the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at Headquarters in New York. Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Security Council Affairs Division, the incumbent reports directly to a Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Division’s Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB). SCSOB provides support to subsidiary bodies established by the Security Council, particularly sanctions committees and groups/panels of experts who assist them in overseeing sanctions regimes. The incumbent will provide substantive and administrative support to the Sanctions Committee established pursuant to resolution 2206 (2015) concerning South Sudan and its Panel of Experts.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: - Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. - Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the countries and thematic mandates on the agenda of the Security Council. - Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat. - Monitors national and regional level political developments that could become a threat to international peace and security. Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the Security Council. - Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and member states and/or Panels of Experts on coordination and policy matters. - Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations. - Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to the Security Council, its subsidiary organs and Panels of Experts. - Participates in missions of the Security Council and its subsidiary organs to countries within assigned area of responsibility. - Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Security Council, its subsidiary bodies, conferences, meetings, and/or special missions. - Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview. - Performs other related duties as required.

Ability to organize and summarize information required for the preparation of relevant documentation for the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies. Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or related area is required. Experience in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council or its subsidiary organs is desirable. Experience working on issues related to South Sudan is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice - This position is a maternity leave replacement and available for four months only. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
