Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Policy Planning Unit (PPU), within the Policy and Mediation Division (PMD) of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs at Headquarters in New York. Under the overall supervision of the Chief, the incumbent reports to the Team Leader of PPU.

PPU is responsible for a wide range of functions related to policy analysis, development and implementation on cross-cutting peace and security issues and emerging questions relevant to the work of the Department.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties related to the development of the New Agenda for Peace: - Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including inputs by Member States and other stakeholders. - Maintains up-to-date knowledge of thematic issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the New Agenda for Peace. - Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat. - Monitors national and regional level political developments. - Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit. - Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. - Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations, particularly as they relate to the development of the New Agenda for Peace. - Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to the New Agenda for Peace. - Performs other related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in conflict prevention, peacemaking or peacebuilding resolution or related area is required.

Experience in drafting policy documents, analytical notes and reports is required.

Experience in networking with academic institutions, research organizations and think-tanks in the area of international peace and security is desirable.

Experience working in UN reform processes in the area of peace and security is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice - This position is financed through extra-budgetary funds and is temporarily available until 31 December 2023. Further extension beyond this date will be subject to satisfactory performance, extension of the mandate and/or availability of funds. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
