Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Peacebuilding Commission Support Branch (PBCSB) of the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The incumbent reports to the Officer in charge of the Secretariat and Communications Unit within PBCSB, and through him/her to the Chief of the Branch.

Established in 2005, the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) helps to sustain peace by fostering international support for nationally owned and led peacebuilding efforts. The Office assists and supports the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), manages the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) on behalf of the Secretary-General, and works to enhance system-wide coherence and partnerships with UN and non-UN actors in support of building and sustaining peace in relevant countries.

The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department's mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority of the Chief of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Support Branch, the Political Officer is responsible for the following duties:

  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political and development issues and formulation of peacebuilding strategies, including by maintaining contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters, as they pertain to the work of the Peacebuilding Commission.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the branch; including note-taking, drafting of analytical and background papers; talking points, speeches and other correspondence to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Supports DPPA/PBSO efforts to enhance the visibility of the Peacebuilding Commission, including by developing and implementing a media strategy, by producing content for and maintaining the Peacebuilding Commission and PBSO websites as well as related social media platforms.
  • Maintains databases with up to date quantitative and qualitative information about the work of the PBC, including feedback from the PBC Chair; representatives of Member States who engage with the PBC; women peacebuilders, and others.
  • Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Peacebuilding Commission, Security Council, General Assembly, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, including using social media to share PBC meetings and related events.
  • Prepares meetings of the Assistant Secretary-General and Branch Chief with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international law, public information and communications, or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, political science, or public information and communications is required. Three years of experience in the area of peacebuilding is desirable. Experience in regional or international organizations in the areas of conflict resolution and mediation missions is desirable. Experience pertaining to communication, public information, social media or website management is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
