The IMF Legal Department is seeking a Paralegal Research Assistant, initially on a one-year contract, to work in its Administrative Law Division. The primary objective of the Administrative Law Division is to provide high-quality legal advice on matters critical to the management and administration of the institution, which includes matters relating to human resources; the procurement and administration of property, goods and services; and litigation of disputes both in the internal fora for employment disputes, and externally in arbitrations and court.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Assistant General Counsel responsible for the Administrative Law Division, or a designee, the successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to preparations for hearings in internal and external litigation practice and providing support in hearings, including by:

  • Maintaining a calendar of case deadlines,
  • Preparing case binders for attorneys
  • Scheduling and screening witnesses,
  • Conducting legal research and briefing questions presented,
  • Collecting, organizing and reviewing discovery material,
  • Preparing evidentiary exhibits and creating demonstrative exhibits,
  • Filing submissions, and
  • Organizing and updating case files.

The successful candidate also will work on lease and contract transactions, and human resource matters, including by:

  • Conducting intake review of deal documentation and following-up with the client to complete the deal file for legal review,
  • Drafting and reviewing correspondence, powers of attorney, secretary’s certifications, estoppel certificates, and other basic legal documents for use by supervising lawyers,
  • Collecting and maintaining repositories of final, signed documents,
  • Identifying and corresponding with external legal counsel to engage for transactions in various jurisdictions, and
  • Reviewing personnel forms for accuracy and completeness, such as marriage, divorce, birth and adoption documentation.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a bachelors degree or equivalent; a pre-law major or otherwise demonstrated interest in the law would be an advantage. In addition, the successful candidate would have a minimum of two years of directly relevant professional paralegal experience - strongly preferred. A paralegal certification or work in a paraprofessional capacity in a law firm will be an advantage. The successful candidate will be highly organized and show the ability to work well under pressure and the technical versatility and flexibility to successfully and independently handle a variety of matters, frequently with short deadlines. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships in a collegial team environment with both internal clients and external parties. Excellent research and analytical skills; clear, concise writing skills; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with counterparts of different cultural backgrounds; outstanding oral communication skills; and excellent planning and organizational skills are essential to the position.

Only candidates who are currently residing in the Washington DC metro area will be considered.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
