The Natural Sciences Sector at UNESCO Bangkok Office organizes its activities under: Ecological and Earth Sciences, Water Sciences, Basic and Engineering Sciences and Science Policy. Climate is a key ecological parameter for ecosystem functioning and restoration. Climate describes weather conditions over 30 years. Climate change is caused by natural and human factors. Recent changes are particularly alarming, because they are accelerated by greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, causing adverse impacts on ecosystem services, water-, food-, and energy security. Climate change will become a cross-cutting issue for all United Nations agencies, Member States, academia, environmental agencies, NGOs, civil-society organizations, the private sector and the general public. Achieving climate resilience needs a professional science-education platform. Climate change is a threat to global peace. Massive wildfires, unusual droughts, extreme hurricanes and floods have the potential to trigger social discontent. Science-based knowledge, mitigation and adaptation methods are essential precursors to enable competency-based discussions and decision-making for human survivability. UNESCO, as part of the United Nations Issue Based Coalition Climate Change Mitigation and Clean Air (ICB), suggested to develop Climate Science Literacy materials, jointly with other UN agencies. UNESCO also suggested that a new comprehensive science-based educational climate kit needs to be developed, aimed at augmenting the climate science literacy knowledge and skills of the general public, high-school and university students, academia, Un and Government officials and other segments of society. **MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** ------------------------------------- **MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, Bangkok, and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist of the Bangkok Natural Sciences Unit, with technical inputs from HQs and JAK Office, the Consultant will perform the following tasks: the consultant will be responsible for the project management of an activity called ‘The World Climate ATLAS’, including the preparation and organization of a donor- and stakeholder webinar to take place approximately around 15th of September 2021, preparatory aspects, organizational aspects, follow-up aspects, and promotional aspects. This includes promoting the activity actively utilizing an existing open-sciences-platform QUEST4ACTION, the production and dissemination of a supportive brochure, coordinating communication with the major stakeholders, such as the University of Heidelberg, the Westermann Publishing House, OGCI, and mobilising additional potential donors and partners. ***Step 1: Develop an exact Concept Note.*** - Share, review, and revise an existing Concept Note and other documents for the production of the ‘World Climate ATLAS’ on a frequent basis, based on situational changes, and stakeholder comments. - Assist in the analysis of documents and reports relating to the promotion of the project, considering existing information on climate-science-education, and climate-science-literacy, in relation to climate-shock-resilience. ***Step 2: Develop a Donor and Stakeholder Webinar*** - Co-organize and support project-based international workshops/meetings/events/online-discussions/with a focus to advance the project with involved stakeholders, and to mobilize new additional donors and partners. ***DELIVERABLES*** Submit to UNESCO the following documents/deliverables: a. Donor-Webinar Concept Note by 30 May 2021 b. Donor-Webinar implementation by 30 September 2021 c. Final report by 30 December 2021 ***DURATION OF CONTRACT*** The Contractor shall be contracted by UNESCO from 20 May 2021 to 31 December 2021. ***PAYMENT SCHEDULE*** The Contractor shall be paid: - 30% fee of the total payment upon submission of Donor-Webinar Concept Note. - 40% fee of the total payment upon submission of Donor-Webinar Concept Note. - 30% fee of the total payment upon submission of Donor-Webinar Concept Note. In line with UNESCO’s overall gender mainstreaming strategy, the Individual Specialist is expected to integrate a gender perspective in all activities and apply gender analysis and mainstreaming concepts whenever feasible. The work shall be completed by 31 December 2021. **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- ***Education:*** - Bachelor’s degree of Science in Climatology, Meteorology, Geography, Geology, Biology, or other relevant fields in the natural sciences or equivalent. - Good scientific understanding of climate zones, climate patters, and the natural and anthropogenic root causes of climate change. ***Professional work experience:*** - Proven international scientific work experience including project management of relevance for unbiased climate change issues and environmental degradation, environmental management. - Proven ability to express complex scientific concepts in terms that can be understood by all walks of life and the general public. ***Required skills and qualifications:*** - Semi-journalistic writing-skills or equivalent, as well as proven skills to produce supportive illustrative materials, such as attractive brochures, newsletters, web-platforms, blogs. - Excellent English language skills, understanding, ecpressing, reading, writing. - Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability. - Ability to prioritize and to work under pressure and meet deadlines. - In-depth knowledge on climate science literacy issues. - Ability to advocate and provide scientific and educative advice of relevance to the project. - Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet research. **APPLICATION PROCESS** ----------------------- Interested candidate should click on "Apply Now" and download and complete the Employment History form (Word document).
