Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Communications Division communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

To help achieve UNEP’s mandate to engage the media which includes drafting materials including creating innovative & effective media strategies, media advisories, press releases, key messaging documents, crafting and placing OpEds and securing & conducting media interviews. In addition, support during key events will also be required in attendance and designing media strategies to ensure sufficient media uptake of key decisions/objectives, specifically the fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-15) and the twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. All outputs will be delivered in close collaboration with the teams that the consultant is hired to support.

These teams include: 1. UNEP News and Media Team, Communication Division 2. UNEP Economy Division communication leads 3. Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) Communication Team 4. Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Communication Team

Under the supervision of the Head of News and Media Unit and the guidance of Chief Digital Strategy, the consultant will perform the following duties: o Provide media support for the launch of the following reports: o Second Eye on Methane Report o Buildings Global Status Report o Post 2020 Framework o 2 IPBES Assessment Reports (ValuesAssessment & #SustainableUse of Wild Species) o 2 Spotlight UNEP Reports (Emissions Gap Report and Adaptation Gap Report)

o Create, develop and implement media strategies for the following events/campaigns/programmes: - Media support for the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and revamping of Think.Eat.Save Campaign - Media support for the SHIFT Programme - Convention of Biological Diversity COP15 - Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species COP 19

o General Media insight and implementation support provided to the UN Environment Programme, Convention on Biological Diversity and Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services priorities as they arise ensuring that all opportunities are leveraged to the max throughout the year based on availability & priori commitments of consultant’s. This is including, but not limited to, flagship reports, events, partnerships etc. o Traditional media coverage capture and summary of reports outlined above o Provide post-meeting media support

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced Masters Degree or higher degree in journalism is required. Experience: A minimum of 10-15 years of progressively experience in the media field with strong & established media relationships or related field is required. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required
