Job Description

Job Overview:

When clients arrive in the U.S., many are interested in connecting to the land, growing food for their families, and maintaining their food culture. Clients are also surrounded by foods with which they are unfamiliar, including many options that can lead to diet-related disease. Unfortunately, such unhealthy options also tend to be cheaper and easier to access than healthy and whole options. The New Roots program works with IRC clients in two main areas: 1) Food Secure Resettlement and 2) community gardening. The program aims to engage newcomer youth in garden and nutrition education, as well as to facilitate food and farming knowledge transfer and relationship-building with the elder generation.

The New Roots Food Security AmeriCorps will work directly with the IRC in Sacramento’s New Roots department empowering refugees through local farming and gardening, nutrition education, and food access. In particular, the VISTA member will support outreach to the refugee community and external partners for the recruitment of participants, the provision of nutrition education trainings and workshops, and the facilitation of refugees’ access to healthy food options. The position will focus on building programmatic capacity and deepening the program’s ties with the Sacramento community.
