Organizational Setting:

FAO Mongolia works with the vision "to be a leading, credible and responsive partner in ensuring food and nutrition security of the population". The office has been coordinating projects and programmes in research, capacity building, natural resources management, technology transfer, food and agriculture policy, livestock production systems management, emergency and post crisis management, forestry information, statistics, food security and nutrition, emergency response operations, crop production system management, and food quality and safety.

The project “ STREAM Mongolia: SusTainable Resilient Ecosystem and Agriculture Management in Mongolia” is part of the Joint Initiative on climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable agriculture for key food systems and sustainable value chains (Global Climate Change Alliance & Development-Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture). In Mongolia, the project is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusam-menarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). The project is financed by the European Union.

Reporting Lines:

Under the direct supervision of National Project Manager (NPM) and technical guidance by FAO-Lead Technical Officer (LTO) in close collaboration with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Local Government, and Aimag Agriculture and Environment Departments, the National Agriculture Specialist will be responsible for the Designing and implementation of the on-the-ground sustainable agriculture and agro-ecology initiatives.

Technical Focus:

The overall objective of the project is to increase Mongolian communities capacity to implement innovative and sustainable long-term landscape management to address food system challenges and climate stresses. FAO‘s Specific objective is mainstreaming climate change adaptation into the agricultural landscape management to increase agricultural productivity, sustainablility and value addition. In a context of a changing climate and growing concerns for more healthy food systems, agro-ecology is gaining momentum as a scientific discipline, sustainable farming approach and social movement.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and under the direct supervision of National Project Manager (NPM) and technical guidance by FAO-Lead Technical Officer (LTO) in close collaboration with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Local Government, and Aimag Agriculture and Environment Departments, the National Agriculture Specialist will be responsible for the Designing and implementation of the on-the-ground sustainable agriculture and agro-ecology initiatives. Specifically, he/she will be responsible for the implementation of following activities described as project Outcome 1; Output 1.2 and Output 1.3:

• Identify, gather, organize and keep updated all relevant documentations related to agro-ecology practices, tools and their potential to be implemented in Mongolia; • Desktop reviews of general agro-ecological practices implemented in ecosystems that are comparable to those in Mongolia; • Study TAPE: Tool for Agro-ecology Performance Evaluation and prepare to use this tool in project target areas and conduct the agro-ecology assessment. Ensure its results will be used as project baselines; • Consult with project team and other field experts as well as with local communities and design agro-ecology-based value chain development activities and lead their implementations; • Design monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track the success of agro-ecology activities based on TAPE; • Develop agro-ecological training programmes for local producers, experts, and community leaders • Contribute to the Creation of National Network of Agro-ecology to spread agro-ecological knowledge for sustainable food systems • Any other tasks that may be relevant to the position

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced degree in sustainable agriculture / agro-ecology and/or related sciences; • Experience in statistical software such as R; • A good command of Excel • Prior work experience or familiarity with UN work on sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management; • Excellent command of language in English and Mongolian including ability to write clearly and concisely is essential. • Nationality of Mongolia.

• Excellent inter-personal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels; • Teamwork and strong soft skills including interpersonal, ethical, listening and communication skills, proactive, problem solving, self-organizing, planning, organizing, setting priorities and efficient use of time; • High computer literacy in MS Office; Adobe (package) ArcGIS, R and land management planning/monitoring tools and analysis software for integrated land management etc.,; • In-depth knowledge of programme and project implementation is considered a strong asset; • Experience in international programme and project implementing organization is an asset; • Willingness to travel regularly in the field;
