Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In Indonesia, UN Women works with government, civil society organizations, academia, the media, the public and private sectors to address national priorities of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Placing the advancement of women’s rights at the centre of our work, UN Women Indonesia focuses on (1) ending violence against women (2) promoting women’s human rights (3) women’s economic empowerment (4) women contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace.

To support the effective implementation of the communication plans and activities of the programmes, UN Women Indonesia Office seeks to embark on a series of targeted communications, visibility, publicity and advocacy. In view of responding to the needs of the office for the above-mentioned purposes, UN Women seeks to hire qualified individuals for photography services in order to contribute to a pool of photos on various aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment in Indonesia.

The photographer will be working closely with the Advocacy and Communication Officer and Programme Staffs to support on communications and dissemination of information about programme events, stories and results through traditional media, UN Women’s website and social media, as well as sharing for use by UN agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

SCOPE OF WORK, SPECIFIC TASKS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The consultant will work with UN Women Indonesia, including the Programme staff and Communications officer to develop a photo bank of images. The main activities of the consultancy will include special events as well as some key targeted events. These include high-level visits of senior officials, the Executive Board, Member State representatives, or Ministers. UN Women Indonesia seeks to document its country programme priorities and in this regard, the consultant will work with UN Women, when required, to visit projects and provide professional photographic coverage of different UN Women-related activities in digital format.

Ke****y Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional photographic coverage in digital original for UN Women; image acquisition includes unconditional non-exclusive and perpetual image rights (see section VI below);
  • Successfully capture and emotionally express the core elements of the situation assigned for coverage;
  • Cover a range of related subjects (different components of events/activities, as well as general photographs that illustrate the real, positive and negative, situation of women and girls);
  • Provide different visual perspectives (close-up, medium-range, long-distance), in both horizontal and vertical formats;
  • Make sure pictures are technically good (properly exposed, processed and framed);
  • Cover all assignments in digital original with images shot at the highest possible resolution that the camera permits;
  • Provide raw full take upon request as well as an edited, optimized selection of best images from each assignment;
  • Undertake field trips to ensure the coverage of special events/activities at the country level. UN Women will undertake all the necessary travel arrangements;
  • The consultant has the right to be credited, implying that their name should accompany all originals and reproductions of their work;
  • Abide by UN Women’s Photo Policy and Guidelines document, as provided

DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT AND DUTY STATION

The time required for the consultancy is estimated at 60 working days within the period from 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021. The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the consultant depending on need and availability within the contract period for a pre-agreed fee.

CONTRACT SUPERVISION

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of Advocacy and Communications Officer, UN Women Indonesia who will be responsible for the quality assurance of the deliverables.

FINAL PRODUCT AND DELIVERABLES

Photos of key program activities, events and side events of the UN Women Country Office.

Specific requirements for photo submission:

  • Colour.
  • The resolution must be a minimum of 4000 pixels on the long side in the original file

  • For every event photographed throughout the contract period, on the same day, a minimum of 50 color digital images in the high-resolution shot as a RAW file and highest quality JPEG files will be delivered to UN Women Indonesia.

  • Each image from the optimized edit as well as the full take must include in the IPTC metadata: the full name of the photographer for photo credit, the name of the event, the date, the venue, and the city/country. If possible and relevant, names and titles should be included as well. IPTC metadata can be embedded within the photo through the use of image editing software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, or Photo Mechanic. In addition to the required info, a descriptive caption written in complete sentences is preferred.

UN Women will provide the following support to the consultant:

  • Briefing and detailed explanation of the kind of photos needed and help in defining the best contents of photos for different purposes;
  • Assistance in acquiring access to specific locations in the form of a letter confirming that the consultant is on an assignment commissioned by UN Women.

WARRANTIES, CONSENT, AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

  • The Consultant represents and warrants that he/she has not, and undertakes that he/she shall not, infringe any third party intellectual property rights in performing any activities pursuant to the Contract. The Consultant represents and warrants that he/she shall perform the activities pursuant to the UN Women Photo Policy and Guidelines including obtaining written consent when required, including from survivors of violence and from the legal guardian/s of children under 18 years of age.
  • The Consultant shall indemnify, hold and save harmless, and defend, at its own expense, UN Women, its officials, employees, consultants, agents or other representatives from and against all suits, claims, demands, and liability of any nature or kind, including their costs and expenses arising out the Consultant’s violations of the representations and warranties above.
  • The indemnity set forth, above, shall not apply to:

  • A claim of infringement resulting from the Consultant’s compliance with specific written instructions by UN Women directing a change in the specifications for the Deliverables or directing a manner of performance of the Contract not normally used by the Consultant; or

  • A claim of infringement resulting from additions to or changes in any Deliverables furnished under the Contract if UN Women or another party acting under the direction of UN Women made the changes.

  • UN Women shall advise the Consultant about any such suits, proceedings, claims, demands, losses, or liability within a reasonable period of time after having received actual notice thereof. The Consultant shall have sole control of the defense of any such suit, proceeding, claim or demand and of all negotiations in connection with the settlement or compromise thereof, except with respect to the assertion or defense of the privileges and immunities of UN Women or any matter relating thereto, for which only UN Women itself is authorized to assert and maintain. UN Women shall have the right, at its own expense, to be represented in any such suit, proceeding, claim or demand by independent counsel of its own choosing.

  • In the event the use by UN Women of any Deliverables provided to UN Women by the Consultant, in whole or in part, in any suit or proceeding, is for any reason enjoined, temporarily or permanently, or is found to infringe any patent, copyright, trademark or other intellectual property rights, or in the event of a settlement, is enjoined, limited or otherwise interfered with, then the Consultant, at its sole cost and expense, shall, promptly, either:

  • Procure for UN Women the unrestricted right to continue using such Deliverables provided to UN Women;

  • Replace or modify the Deliverables provided to UN Women, or part thereof, with the equivalent or better product, or part thereof, that is non-infringing; or,
  • Refund to UN Women the full price paid by UN Women for the right to have or use such Deliverables, or part thereof.

  • UN Women confirms that the whole of the copyright present, future, or contingent whatsoever and all other rights, title, and interest in and to the Deliverables shall be vested in the Consultant throughout the world in accordance with all applicable copyright laws. The Consultant further acknowledges and agrees that UN Women shall have the unconditional non-exclusive and perpetual right to make use of the Deliverables including but not limited to the entire take of all photographs from the Assignment in such manner as UN Women shall in its sole discretion think fit including without limitation the right to include the Deliverables on its own website and/or in any other public relations materials used to promote UN Women. UN Women may re-edit the Deliverables or any part thereof as convenient for its own exploitation of the Deliverables in any medium. UN Women may provide the Deliverables to other UN agencies and the media at no cost and may apply a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDeriv 2.0 Generic license to the Deliverables.

  • The provisions of this section shall supersede any inconsistent terms in the Contract for Consultant including the Conditions of Service for Consultants.

SCHEDULE OF PAYMENTS

Payment in full upon final submission and satisfactory deliverables of each event.

Required Skills and Experience

  1. THE QUALIFICATIONS EXPECTED ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Education:

  • Minimum secondary education;

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of working experience in photography with a record of providing high-quality, creative, images for clients;
  • High level of creativity and initiative;
  • Experience capturing images for development organizations e.g NGO, UN Agencies, etc., is an asset;
  • A certain familiarity with gender issues is an asset;

Language and Other Requirements:

  • Indonesian nationals;
  • Ability to communicate in English is an asset;
  • Provide necessary professional camera(s), lenses, computers, software, and other photography equipment as necessary to complete assignments.
