This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Mission, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the Programme Officer with the implementation of the Migration and Development Programme Portfolio. This will include, but not limited to coordinating programme activities related to the Small-Scale Cross Border Trade Initiative, the Africa Regional Migration Programme and the Diaspora Engagement Projects;

  • Assist in coordination of activities related to the development of a migration policy framework in Zambia;

  • Assist in monitoring all aspects of project implementation, follow up on logistical and administrative arrangements, identify problems, and propose action to expedite the delivery of outputs;
  • Assist in analyzing progress and implementation reports and identify and document significant project events, decisions, problems, or deviations;
  • Assist in monitoring project expenditures and verify they are in line with the budget provisions and support with drafting interim, quarterly and final donor reports in accordance with different donor requirements and templates;
  • Liaise with the resource management colleagues to ensure that all necessary administrative requirements and resources are coordinated in a timely manner;

  • Support the Programme Officer with information gathering and support for needs assessment and analysis ensuring beneficiary participation including adequate attention given to the needs and challenges by gender and of vulnerable groups;

  • Stay up to date regarding assessments and reports produced by other agencies and organizations and extract relevant and important information for reference and use in IOM reporting;
  • Draft one-pagers and briefs relating to programme activities and other issues/activities;
  • Develop and maintain liaison at appropriate level with Governmental authorities, national and international institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations and voluntary agencies aiming at coordinating new activities and facilitating the implementation of on-going activities;
  • Undertake duty travel and attend internal meetings, external partner meetings, and/or thematic seminars and conferences and take notes when required;

  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Master’s degree or equivalent in Humanitarian Affairs, Political Science, Law (General), Human Rights Law, Development Studies from an accredited institution with at least two years of relevant professional experience.

  • 0-2 years
  • Ideally, Two or more years’ experience in migration management, border management, diaspora engagement and trade issues preferably in the international development/humanitarian sector. Knowledge and understanding of international migration-related frameworks is desirable. Excellent writing and communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with Government authorities, national and international organizations, and other project partners would be an advantage. Ability to interpret information and identify and analyze problems and propose solutions as well as a demonstrated aptitude for project development, including engagement with non-traditional donors is also desirable.

Language skills:

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Interpersonal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 years old throughout the duration of their service.
