Result of Service The overall purpose of this post is the provision and coordination of specialized activities related to the repair and maintenance of mission vehicles, in accordance with vehicle manufacture standards and all relevant safety procedures.

Expected duration As soon as possible, for an initial period of six (06) months, with possible extension.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs.

This position is located in the Generator Cell, Sourcing Support Unit (SSU), Supply Chain Service at the United Nations Global Service Centre, Brindisi, Italy. The Contractor provides efficient technical assistance to a senior engineering staff and to other users in support of activities related to the design, development and execution of various engineering services related primarily to generator mechanics services in UNGSC.

The Contractor is under the general supervision of the Chief Generator Cell.

The Individual Contractor will contribute to the various engineering services by undertaking the following tasks:

  • Services and repairs standard civilian pattern commercial vehicles and machineries in accordance with manufactures standards.
  • Ensures that all relevant safety procedures have been followed when repairing and fitting replacement parts.
  • Assist in vehicle and machineries inspections such as pre-summer and winter inspections on UN-owned vehicles/machineries assigned to various units.
  • Produces reports to document all servicing and repairs.
  • Assists in identifying, diagnosing and rectifying various faults.
  • Assists with the identification of required parts.
  • Is qualified to work on one or more of the following specialized systems: - Automotive Electrical System, including Carlog - Air conditioning systems - Suspension Systems - Braking systems
  • Is qualified to work in one or more of the following specialized areas: - Diagnostic and fault finding - Quality Control/assurance - Road testing - Vehicle/Machinery recovery.
  • Is capable of safely modifying vehicles/machineries to meet specific requirements, overhauling major assemblies, fabricating components and spare parts, and extemporizing repairs.
  • Carries out any other duties assigned by the supervisor or by the Head of Solution Factory Unit.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Technical certificate either from a Technical College/Trade School or through an accepted national apprenticeship programme is desirable. Certification as a heavy equipment mechanic is desirable. Valid national driving license for B class is required. Valid national driving license for C class is desirable. Experience: A minimum of two (02) years experience in installation, repair and servicing of vehicles/machineries. Work experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic is desirable. Work experience using Vehicle/Machinery Electronic diagnostic tools is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Italian is required Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
